Job summary

Belcan is seeking a Test Equipment Design Engineer (Mechanical) in Berkeley, CA for a 3‑month contract. The role focuses on designing and delivering test equipment for critical tests across iron‑air battery systems and supporting hardware. Pay is $60/hr DOE.

Responsibilities include creating jigs, fixtures, and test beds, collaborating with electrical engineers on sensors, and ensuring safety and compliance in high‑power environments while documenting designs and procedures.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years of mechanical design and/or test equipment development experience.
• Proficiency with mCAD tools such as SolidWorks and NX.
• Experience in a Manufacturing Engineering environment delivering production-quality tools.
• Strong understanding of safety and compliance in high-power/chemical environments.
• Excellent problem-solving with a balance of speed, rigor, and safety.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and deploy custom jigs and fixtures for mechanical testing.
• Develop material handling hardware for lifting and moving cells and modules.
• Package test equipment for verification testing of BMS hardware.
• Architect test beds for air and liquid handling in verification testing.
• Collaborate with electrical engineers to select sensors and actuators.
• Contribute to software for test beds, including control and data acquisition.
• Ensure safety, reliability, and compliance for high-power systems.
• Document test system designs and usage guidelines.
• Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement of deployed test infrastructure.
