Job summary

QuantumScape is seeking a hardware engineer to own the electrical design of the battery management system for high-voltage packs up to 600V, focusing on AFE architecture, temperature monitoring, and protective FET selection. You will shape a robust, scalable BMS architecture with rigorous verification.

You will collaborate with mechanical and firmware teams to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance, defining tests and DFMEA plans.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 9+ years in battery pack or BMS design; or Master’s with 8+ years; PhD with 5+ years.
• 5+ years in battery pack or BMS design with at least two products through prototype validation or production.
• Familiar with schematic and PCB design tools (Altium or Cadence).
• In-depth understanding of Li-Ion battery technology and protections.
• Experience designing analog, digital and power circuits for battery apps.
• Familiar with PSPICE/LTSpice/Simulink/PSIM simulation.
• Strong PCB layout skills: high-speed, thermal, manufacturing, EMI mitigation.
• Component management and BOM, safety specification verification.
• Experience bringing up, testing and troubleshooting new platforms.
• Knowledge of grounding, isolation, creepage/clearance and hi-pot testing.
• DFMEA/HALT and design margin analysis experience.
• Battery safety standards experience: UL1973, UL9540A, IEC62619.
• Ability to collaborate with mechanical, firmware, and marketing teams.
• Ability to generate engineering documentation: specs, diagrams, reviews, drawings, reports.

Responsibilities

• Design BMS system with pack voltages up to 600V and power >20kW.
• Create schematics and PCB for the BMS.
• Define connections for voltage sensing, balancing and temperature monitoring.
• Select protection devices based on worst-case operating conditions.
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers on heat sinks and wiring harnesses.
• Ensure hardware redundancy on critical protection functions.
• Work with marketing to generate engineering specifications.
• Perform design margin analysis and DFMEA.
• Specify design verification tests for safety and regulatory compliance.
• Support UL 1973 and UL 9540A certification activities.
• Coordinate with external design teams for system integration.
