Job summary

Arizona Public Service - APS is seeking a Battery Specialist - Electrical to support the reliability and performance of critical substation battery systems across our service territory. This role performs advanced testing, maintenance, and commissioning of stationary battery systems that provide essential backup power for substations and grid operations.

Qualifications

• Qualified Substation Journeyman with at least 1 year of relevant experience.
• Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
• Willingness to travel and perform out-of-town work as needed.
• Must reside within 1 hour of the designated headquarters location.
• Ability to interpret test data and technical documentation.
• Must be able to respond to emergency call-outs, including nights, weekends, and overtime.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced electrical testing on substation battery systems, including: Battery capacity testing, Voltage testing, Resistance testing, Acceptance testing for newly installed battery banks
• Conduct functional testing for substation high, low, and ground alarm systems.
• Utilize specialized electrical testing equipment, software applications, and diagnostic tools to monitor and maintain battery health.
• Maintain, repair, and install battery systems and related equipment in accordance with IEEE, FERC, and NERC standards.
• Plan, coordinate, and execute scheduled battery testing and maintenance programs.
• Develop and maintain expertise related to battery technologies, chemical hazards, and electrical safety practices.
• Partner with multiple departments including Engineering, Protection & Control, System Health, Project Planning, Predictive Maintenance, Supply Chain, IT Communications, and other operational teams.
• Support new construction projects through battery acceptance testing and commissioning activities.
• Train and mentor Battery Specialists and other personnel as needed.
• Participate in emergency restoration efforts and outage response activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Qualified Substation Journeyman with a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Substation Journeyman.
• Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
• Strong computer and data entry skills.
• Ability to interpret test data and technical documentation.
• Willingness to travel and perform out-of-town work as required.
• Ability to respond to emergency call-outs, including nights, weekends, and overtime situations.
• Must meet aerial equipment weight restrictions of 300 lbs. or less.
• Must reside within one (1) hour of the designated headquarters location.
• Successful completion of qualifying tests may be required.

Preferred Skills
