Position Summary

The Battery Simulation Engineer is a key technical role within Gotion's Battery Engineering team. In this Sr-level position, you will build and validate multi-physics simulation models across the battery system - from cell-level electrochemical behavior through pack-level thermal and mechanical performance - and link simulation results and test data to program-level decisions. Working directly with US OEM customers and Gotion's internal cell team, you will help drive new cell and pack designs from concept to mass production, negotiating performance requirements and specifications while anchoring the team's simulation capabilities to support next-generation battery development.

  • Lead the development and validation of electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical simulation models to characterize cell and pack performance across operating conditions (fast-charge, thermal runaway, mechanical abuse, cycle life).
  • Use a first-principles approach to build high-fidelity simulation models, balancing physical accuracy with computational efficiency for design-stage decision-making.
  • Collaborate with US OEM customers and Gotion's internal cell team to drive new cell designs from concept to mass production, defining performance criteria including electrochemical, mechanical, and safety requirements.
  • Negotiate design requirements and final product specifications directly with US OEM customers.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for active programs, ensuring simulation models are accurately represented in vehicle- and system-level performance targets.
  • Develop and implement test plans to validate new cell and pack designs, analyzing and addressing failure modes.
  • Synthesize simulation and test results into program-level impacts and report regularly to leadership.
  • Champion an "automation-first" mindset, building simulation frameworks and pipelines that enable faster, repeatable runs and standardized outputs with minimal manual intervention.
  • Partner with thermal, mechanical, and systems engineers to integrate simulation outputs into broader battery and thermal management systems, addressing temperature non-uniformity, pack-level behavior, and system-level tradeoffs.
  • Evaluate and implement simulation software/platforms (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, or custom codebases) to support cross-functional simulation needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have direct reports but may provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior simulation and cell engineers on cross-functional program work.

Required Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of academic/industry experience simulating complex physical systems, with a strong grasp of lithium-ion battery operating principles and cell design.
  • Experience with multi-physics simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent) and scripting/automation (Python, MATLAB).
  • Strong foundation in engineering principles with a proven history of applying this knowledge to solve complex problems, and a track record working with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Strong instincts for automation and building scalable simulation frameworks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience presenting technical findings to leadership and negotiating requirements directly with customers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with P2D or equivalent electrochemical modeling.
  • Direct experience negotiating cell design requirements and specifications with OEM customers.
  • Experience in lithium-ion cell design, cell qualification, and cell manufacturing.
