Job summary

GDI is innovating energy storage with silicon anode technology for defense and high-performance markets. This position, reporting to a Senior Battery Materials Engineer, will assist laboratory testing, coin/pouch cell construction, and data analysis to improve performance. Strong hands-on lab skills and battery chemistry knowledge are essential.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. Travel up to 30% may be required for collaborations and testing.

GDI is developing the next generation of energy storage, starting with advanced battery solutions for defense applications and expanding into other high-performance markets. Our 100% silicon anode technology is designed to deliver higher energy density, longer runtime, and faster charging capabilities that are especially important for demanding defense applications and, over time, a wide range of commercial uses. As our technology and manufacturing capabilities mature, GDI plans to expand into other high-performance markets, including electric mobility, consumer electronics, aerospace, and other demanding energy storage applications.

Our team has decades of combined experience and has developed a portfolio of more than 40 issued patents and more than 40 pending patent applications. We are developing practical, scalable battery technology with the goal of delivering safer, higher-performance energy storage solutions for some of the most demanding applications in the market.

Educational Requirements:Minimally BS in Engineering or MS in Physical Sciences with an emphasis on Energy Storage and/or Material Science preferred or, a BS in the Physical Sciences with 2+yearswork experience in a field relevant to the company’s activities

Experience/Skills Required:

• Extensive laboratory experience in both the making and characterization of materials.
• Fundamental chemical and/or mechanical engineering principles.
• Familiarity with material characterization such as SEM/EDS, TEM, XRD, TGA.
• Handling of hazardous materials and general laboratory safety best practices mandatory.

Experience/Skills Preferred:

• Battery cell construction and characterization; full and half cells,pouchand coin cell formats.
• Battery cycler programming.
• Electrochemical characterization techniques such as galvanostatic/potentiostaticcycling, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy.
• Basic understanding of the chemistry and operation oflithium-ionbatteries.
• Familiarity with CVD processes, cleanroom operations, glovebox operations, and dry room assembly environments.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• You will be reporting toa Senior Battery Materials Engineer.
• Operateand manageequipment for laboratory testing includingbattery cycler systems.
• Construction of coin/pouch cells for internal/external testing, for up to 35% of general workload.
• Provide engineering analysis for the impact of different components in battery cells on the overall performance.
• Prepare summary reports, communicate results in an effective way.
• Material characterization, engineering principles, basic statistics and analysis of data, independent learning.
• Assistand contribute to battery cell handling and testing procedures.
• Develop and implement system support process and documentation.
• Interact with existing and potential collaborators inside and outside of the organization.
• Support business development efforts as needed.
• Expand and protect the company’s intellectual property portfolio.

Travel:

Some travel may berequiredwithin NYS (up to 20%), domestically (up to 25%) and internationally (up to 10%) annually, depending on Covid restrictions and safety requirements. Total travelnot to exceed30% annually. A valid driver's license and use of a personal vehicle may berequired.

Compensation:

Salary range is from $60,000 to $90,000 based upon relevant education and experience.

Position Classification:

This position is classified as exempt per NYS guidelines.
As a start-up company, the expectation is to work aminimumof 40 hours per week as necessary to complete job responsibilities.
