Job summary

Northeastern University seeks an Associate Research Scientist to conduct integrated experimental and theoretical research on mechano-electrochemical behavior of battery materials, electrodes, and cells.

Role includes hands-on fabrication, AI-assisted data analysis, and development of new materials, with leadership on an ARPA-E funded collaboration with Saint-Gobain. Strong emphasis on publishing results and pursuing external funding.

Qualifications

• PhD in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or closely related field.
• 0-3 years of relevant research experience in battery systems or electrochemical energy storage.
• Ability to fabricate and assemble battery cells and conduct cycling tests.
• Experience with chemo-mechanics and coupled electrochemical-mechanical phenomena in electrodes and active particles.
• Familiarity with computational tools for data analysis and/or simulation.

Responsibilities

• Lead the ARPA-E project to collaborate with Saint-Gobain on battery lifetime extension.
• Develop new technologies for lithium extraction and direct recycling of battery electrode.
• Write new proposals with the PI for NSF, DOE, and other funding agencies.
• Act as lab manager for lab safety and basic functioning; train students with battery manufacturing skills.
• Document and disseminate research findings through publications, reports, and presentations, and contribute to collaborative research efforts.
