Job summary

OSU Oregon State University’s Orange Media Network is seeking a Baro Beat Reporter for up to 24 hours per week. You will research, pitch and write stories on ASOSU and Student Fee processes, attend meetings, and develop ongoing coverage for The Barometer.

You’ll collaborate with photographers, editors and staff, meet deadlines, mentor new hires, and contribute to diverse, fair coverage of student government and campus issues.

Qualifications

  • Has had prior reporting experience.
  • Understanding of AP Style.
  • Understanding of the SPJ Code of Ethics.
  • Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks.
  • Able to meet deadlines.
  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking.
  • Is organized and reliable.
  • Is comfortable with giving and receiving feedback.
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations.
  • Must complete all elements of onboarding curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Researching, pitching and writing news stories covering student government and the student fee process.
  • Attend, report and follow up on ASOSU and SFC meetings.
  • This includes Senate meetings, public hearings, and Student Fee Committee events.
  • Connect and build relationships with ASOSU and SFC officers and professional staff to develop stories.
  • Meet with student government stakeholders in person or via email, phone or Zoom a minimum of once each week to develop story ideas.
  • Write at least two stories per week for The Barometer.
  • Develop one or more additional story pitches for weekly cohort meetings.
  • Work with photographers and designers to enhance content through photos, graphics and multimedia.
  • Bring information and learning gained from working with individuals and communities to share with The Barometer.
  • Attend all cohort meetings as required by editor(s) in chief; communicate attendance plans in advance.
  • Able to act as mentor to new hires.
  • Provide fair and accurate coverage.
  • Meet deadlines as assigned
  • Participate in readouts with editors to make any necessary revisions in style or content.
  • Communicate any errors and corrections to editor-in-chief.
  • Act in a professional manner at all times and create and maintain collegial working relationships with fellow student leaders and organization members.
  • Other duties as assigned by the editor.
