Job Overview
This general laborer position is responsible for loading and unloading barges and trucks, and performing related tasks at the grain export terminal in Convent, Louisiana.
Responsibilities
- Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
- Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations, including wearing appropriate PPE.
- Perform deckhand responsibilities such as reading drafts, opening and closing lids, and tying off barges; oversee deckhand(s).
- Perform all barge loading duties to meet draft and quality requirements, and oversee deckhand(s).
- Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate locations while maintaining grain quality during storage and transfer.
- Complete documentation accurately and legibly in a timely manner.
- Perform general clean-up activities including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other housekeeping tasks.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs where applicable.
- Unloading barges, cleaning barges, moving product to storage, loading trucks using heavy equipment, loading rail, loading products to required specifications, operating and shutting down a dryer, and operating a variety of heavy equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience Required: None.
- Preferred: 1 year of experience in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Basic mathematical skills; effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to complete documentation; ability to follow directions and troubleshoot problems; ability to work independently and within a team; ability to use tools appropriately; ability to focus on customer service.
Physical Demands & Requirements
- Lift/push/pull up to 45 lbs. occasionally.
- Climb, crouch, stoop, bend, and squat frequently.
- Stand and walk constantly or continuously; balance constantly or continuously.
- Kneel occasionally.
- Safely walk on barge surfaces and work around deep water.
- Grasp and reach frequently.
- Understand and communicate verbally and in writing, including over two-way radio.
- Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Climb stairs and ladders to significant heights; work in confined spaces; work in high dust environments.
- Meet PFT and fit testing requirements; use all applicable PPE.
- Recognize subtle differences in odors when necessary.
- Work extended hours, including weekends, holidays, and alternate shifts.
- Work rotating 12-hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Environment
The work environment is inside and outside, in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions; frequent use of personal protective equipment. Travel of 5-20% may be required at some facilities.
Compensation
The expected base pay range for this role is $17.50 - $20.00 per hour, but actual pay may vary based on location, job-related knowledge, skills and experience.
