Overview
This general laborer position is responsible for loading and unloading barges and trucks at an industrial facility. The role includes preparing barges for operation, performing deckhand duties, maintaining grain quality, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
- Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
- Perform deckhand responsibilities such as reading drafts, opening/closing lids, tying off barges, and supporting other staff.
- Load barges to meet draft and quality requirements, oversee other deckhands, and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Transfer, load, and move grain to the appropriate location; maintain grain quality during storage and transfer.
- Perform general housekeeping duties, including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting and other cleaning tasks.
- Carry out preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Unload barges, clean barges, move product to storage, load trucks using heavy equipment, load rail, and operate or monitor equipment such as dryers.
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment and monitor its operation, including starting and shutting down machinery.
- Complete and maintain accurate records and documentation in a timely manner.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record (preferred; none required).
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow directions, interpret instructions and troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned tasks.
- Ability to work in a customer‑service oriented environment, both internally and externally.
Physical Demands & Requirements
- Ability to bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat frequently and continuously.
- Ability to lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally and continuously, as needed.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and work at significant heights.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and on barge surfaces near water.
- Ability to work in high dust environments, extreme weather conditions, and outdoors.
- Ability to stand and walk continuously, with no significant periods of rest.
- Ability to complete work in rotating 12-hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment and understand radio communications, emergency alarms, and safety signals.
