General Laborer position responsible for loading and unloading barges and trucks, performing maintenance and housekeeping tasks, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings.
- Perform deckhand duties, including reading drafts, opening/closing lids, and tying off barges.
- Load barges to meet draft and quality requirements; oversee deckhand personnel when applicable.
- Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate storage or shipping locations.
- Maintain grain quality during storage or transfer.
- Complete documentation accurately, legibly, and in a timely manner.
- Conduct general clean‑up, sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other housekeeping activities.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs as required.
- Unload barges, clean barges, move product to storage, and load trucks or rail using heavy equipment.
- Operate, run, monitor, and shut down dryers and other heavy equipment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- No prior experience required, but 1 year of work in an industrial environment is preferred.
- Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to read, fill out, and interpret general documentation.
- Follow directions and use logical reasoning to interpret instructions.
- Work well independently and within a team.
- Use tools appropriate for assigned tasks.
- Maintain focus and deliver excellent customer service internally and externally.
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions
- Continuous balance, bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, crawling, kneeling, and squatting.
- Climb stairs and ladders to significant heights frequently.
- Lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally and continuously, depending on daily needs.
- Perform work in confined spaces and on barge surfaces near water.
- Work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, wet, humid, and dry conditions.
- Work rotating 12‑hour shifts with night, weekend, holiday, and extended hours as required.
- Operate personal protective equipment and meet PFT/fit testing requirements where applicable.
- Travel up to 20% of the time for training or alternate assignments.
