Overview
A Bar Back maintains clean glassware, displays it in a safe manner, and ensures all equipment is continuously cleaned after each use. This associate works as part of a team to provide friendly, efficient, and professional service, ensuring guests receive immediate attention.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintain par levels of supplies at the bar, including stocking ice, paper products, to-go cups, glassware, china for menu items, roll-ups, etc.
- Keep the bartender informed of items to be ordered regularly, anticipating business needs to prevent shortages.
- Acknowledge guests if the bartender is busy, and relay guest orders to the bartender.
- Respond to all requests from bartenders for priorities and assistance.
- Bring bar food from the kitchen to the bar for the bartender or direct where to place it.
- Assist in setting up bar wells when needed.
- Cut bar fruit daily as required.
- Check all glassware for chips, spots, prints, soap residue, lipstick, etc.
- Assist in clearing the bar by returning used plates and silverware to the dishroom as guests finish.
- Rinse blenders and other equipment after use.
- Rotate stock as needed and pour wines with bartender approval.
- Maintain organized and clean storage of all bar items.
- Understand and comply with all company, city, and state liquor laws.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Report to the head bartender upon arrival, before breaks, and before leaving.
- Check schedules for changes and stay informed of posted memos.
- Complete all assigned sidework before, during, and after shifts.
- Assist other team members in the restaurant, decks, and raw bar/sushi bar as needed.
- Work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, for extended hours.
- Stock all beverage items daily.
- Assist bartenders with stocking tasks.
- Maintain cleanliness standards in the front of the house to ensure high-quality product presentation.
- Interact courteously and professionally with colleagues and guests, creating a “WOW” experience.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of all bar equipment.
- Inspect and evaluate the physical condition of equipment daily for cleanliness.
- Manage time and productivity according to business volume.
- Report any repairs needed to the bar manager.
- Transport glasses, ice, heavy bottles, kegs, and other inventory continuously.
- Work efficiently in a fast-paced bar environment.
- Understand and comply with all liquor laws.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Good communication skills in English, both speaking and understanding.
- Speed, accuracy, attention to detail, courtesy, and anticipation of guest needs.
- Willingness to work long hours on your feet in high-pressure environments, handling multiple tasks.
- Good physical condition to bend, reach overhead, push, pull, and handle repetitive use of hands and wrists, with frequent exposure to water and temperature changes.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Must be over 21 years old.
Experience
At least 1 year in a mid to high volume outlet, with knowledge of beverages, wines, and spirits helpful.
Education
High school diploma required.
