Job summary

Evlo AI is seeking a Backend Engineer to design APIs, services, and data-intensive systems powering our user-facing products at scale. The role emphasizes distributed systems, cloud deployments on AWS, and measurable performance.

You'll work with Go/Java/Python and collaborate with an Austin-based team that operates across time zones, valuing clear docs, pragmatic architecture, and reliable observability.

Qualifications

• 3-8 years of professional software engineering experience with a backend focus.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Go, Java, Python, Kotlin, or C++) with production services experience.
• Hands-on experience designing APIs, distributed systems, background jobs, and event-driven architectures.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, and performance tuning; PostgreSQL preferred.
• Practical experience with cloud infrastructure and production operations (AWS, containers, CI/CD, observability).
• Bachelor’s degree in CS/engineering or equivalent experience.
• Bonus: Kafka, gRPC, GraphQL, Terraform, service meshes, or high-throughput systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement production services and REST/GraphQL APIs using backend technologies.
• Build data workflows with PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, including schema design and migrations.
• Deploy and operate services on AWS using Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Improve system performance, availability, and observability with profiling, load testing, logging, metrics, and tracing.
• Define service contracts, failure-handling, and security controls for integrations.
• Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests; participate in reviews and incident response.
