Job summary

H1 is seeking a Software Engineer II to contribute to the MCU team, delivering full-stack capabilities and scalable services that power Healthcare data platforms.

You will build APIs and backend services, participate in architecture discussions, and work across React frontends and NestJS backends, with autonomy to own features from design through production support.

Qualifications

  • Experience building production-grade applications in a distributed systems environment.
  • Experience developing APIs, backend services, and/or microservices.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native development using Kubernetes and AWS.
  • Strong understanding of SQL databases, especially PostgreSQL.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to features end-to-end from implementation to deployment and production support.
  • Develop and maintain APIs, backend services, and distributed microservice architectures.
  • Build and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, queries, and indexes for large-scale apps.
  • Build and maintain Kafka-based event-driven systems and consumer groups.
  • Develop and optimize Elasticsearch indexes and search queries for high-volume workloads.
  • Support apps running in Kubernetes and participate in cloud infrastructure tasks.
  • Collaborate with Product and Design to translate requirements into scalable solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews and engineering discussions to share best practices.

  • The MCU Engineering team plays a critical role in delivering the scalable platform capabilities that power H1’s products
  • Our engineers build the services, APIs, event-driven systems, and user experiences that transform complex healthcare data into fast, reliable, and intuitive products used by life sciences organizations around the world
  • Working across modern cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and AI-enabled technologies, this team solves challenging technical problems at scale while partnering closely with Product, Design, and Data Engineering to continually improve the performance, reliability, and capabilities of our platform
  • As a Software Engineer II on our MCU team, you will contribute to the delivery of meaningful product capabilities across the full stack, working closely with senior engineers, Product, and Design to build scalable, high-performing applications that power H1’s platform
  • Contribute to features end-to-end from implementation and testing through deployment and production support, with guidance from senior team members
  • Develop and maintain APIs, backend services, and distributed microservice architectures
  • Implement and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, queries, and indexes for large-scale applications
  • Build and maintain Kafka-based event-driven systems, including producers, consumers, and consumer groups
  • Develop and optimize Elasticsearch indexes, mappings, and search queries for high-volume search workloads
  • Support applications running in Kubernetes environments, including basic operational troubleshooting
  • Contribute to AWS-based cloud infrastructure and participate in Spark and EMR data workflows supporting the platform
  • Build and maintain full-stack applications across React frontends and NestJS backend services
  • Participate in code reviews and architecture discussions, learning and applying engineering best practices
  • Partner with Product and Design to translate business requirements into reliable technical solutions
  • Contribute to improving system reliability, observability, and performance through thoughtful engineering decisions

Bonus Skills
  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, including database design, querying, and basic performance considerations
  • Familiarity with Kafka or other event-driven messaging systems
  • 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience building production-grade applications
  • Exposure to Golang
  • Experience with Python/PySpark or similar technologies for data processing workflows
  • Hands‑on experience with TypeScript and Node.js, with exposure to delivering customer-facing full-stack features
  • Interest in or early experience building AI-powered applications or integrating LLM APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic); familiarity with RAG architectures or frameworks such as LangChain or Vercel AI SDK is a bonus
  • Exposure to Elasticsearch or similar search technologies
  • Solid understanding of software fundamentals, including debugging, testing, and writing maintainable code
  • Experience developing APIs, backend services, and/or microservices in a distributed systems environment
