Job description

We're seeking a Staff Engineer to serve as a full-stack developer and technical leader responsible for designing and developing all layers of complex software applications within our healthcare technology environment. This role combines hands-on development with technical leadership, working on an agile product development team to drive significant initiatives, establish best practices, and mentor engineering teammates. You'll partner closely with product management, architecture, engineering teams, and business stakeholders to design, build, and support scalable, secure, and reliable systems that support critical healthcare business functions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement high-quality software features and components for complex software solutions, including responsible use of agentic coding tools to enhance productivity and maintainability
• Lead sizing and complexity evaluation discussions for initiatives, and troubleshoot complex software, application, and performance issues through analysis, testing, and root-cause investigation
• Define and implement comprehensive testing strategies covering unit, system, and end-to-end tests, as well as security, performance, regression, and automation testing
• Coach teams on advanced testing techniques including test-driven development (TDD), behavior-driven development (BDD), and testing for positive and negative scenarios
• Design and implement scalable data ingestion and processing solutions supporting analytical and operational workloads using data modeling, schema design, query optimization, and database performance tuning techniques
• Design and support cloud-native solutions leveraging AWS technologies including MWAA (Apache Airflow), Glue, Lambda, SQS, S3, EKS (Kubernetes), Aurora PostgreSQL, and Redshift
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Concourse, or similar technologies, and manage infrastructure using infrastructure as code (IaC) including Terraform
• Support production systems through deployment activities, monitoring, incident response, troubleshooting, and operational improvements while participating in on-call support processes
• Lead security-first development practices using knowledge of standard security protocols, secure coding techniques, and appropriate protection of sensitive information including PHI
• Implement secure integration methods and data-transfer protocols including TLS, SFTP, PGP, and complete regulatory compliance documentation
• Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to translate business needs into practical technical solutions that balance functionality, maintainability, scalability, and delivery timelines
• Provide technical mentorship and constructive feedback to engineers, facilitating effective team collaboration and guiding peers in engineering best practices

The ideal candidate

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, IT, or equivalent work experience
• Highly motivated self-learner with strong technical curiosity and passion for continuous learning
• High level of experience with Python, and strong experience with at least one other programming language (TypeScript and/or Java preferred)
• Extensive experience with cloud computing platforms and infrastructure as code, specifically with AWS services including MWAA (Apache Airflow), Glue, Lambda, SQS, S3, and EKS (Kubernetes)
• High level of experience with SQL RDBMSes, including database design, data modeling, query optimization, and troubleshooting (PostgreSQL preferred)
• Experience with non-relational databases and messaging systems
• Proven experience with standard service and software deployment patterns and CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions or Concourse
• High level of experience developing, deploying, and supporting REST services and microservices architectures
• Demonstrated ability to provide company-wide impact through influencing cross-team initiatives, mentoring teammates, driving innovation, and guiding projects with unclear outcomes
• Expert-level knowledge of relational and non-relational database server management
• Strong understanding of data storage and access strategies, metadata design, and data transmission techniques
• Experience designing systems for high availability, load balancing, and disaster recovery
• Proficiency with advanced monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions for infrastructure
• Deep knowledge of security protocols, common security risks, secure coding techniques, and threat modeling
• Experience with architectural patterns for creating large-scale, highly reliable system designs
• Excellent track record of collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
