Job summary

Roche is seeking an experienced Freelance Backend Software Engineer to work remotely within the EU, contributing to backend services used by mySugr, Accu-Chek, navify or other Roche products.

You will join cross-functional teams, emphasize clean code, CI/CD, and high-quality software delivery while collaborating with architects, frontend engineers and product owners. This role is full-time and remote in the EU.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience as a Software Engineer.
• At least 2 years of full-time Backend Engineer experience.
• Proficient in Java 17+ and Spring 5/Hibernate/JAX-RS.
• Experience with SQL and PostgreSQL.
• Experience with AWS or other cloud providers.
• Strong written and verbal English communication.
• EU citizen or Austrian work permit.

Responsibilities

• Develop clean, stable, testable, and performant backend code for mobile apps.
• Collaborate with architects, frontend engineers, QAs and product owners.
• Contribute to CI/CD, code reviews, and quality days.

Here’s what we're looking for: Position available remotely within EU We are looking for an experienced, motivated Freelance Backend Software Engineer who will work closely with their Backend colleagues, as well as support our product teams. You will contribute with your knowledge of Java, Spring, Hibernate, relational databases & REST within our agile and cross-functional teams. As a flexible and open-minded person with a passion for clean code you will be a perfect addition to our team. Essential skills for this mission:

• You enjoy developing clean, stable, testable and performant backend code, serving our beautiful mobile applications
• You have at least 3 years of experience working as a Software Engineer
• You have at least 2 years of full-time experience as a Backend Engineer
• You love working in and supporting an interdisciplinary team, together with architects, frontend engineers, QAs, and product owners
• You are passionate about solid technical design, clean code and future-proof architectures
• You are familiar with Java 17+ and frameworks like Spring 5, Hibernate, or JAX-RS
• You have experience with SQL and relational databases like PostgreSQL
• You have experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or any other cloud provider
• You want to learn new technologies and are able to adopt them quickly
• Great written and verbal communication in English
• You are either an EU citizen or hold a valid Austrian work permit

Bonus skills:

• Experience with medical, security, and privacy regulations
• Knowledge of the diabetes industry or other comparable health industries
• Experience working in agile environments
