Surge is seeking a Backend Engineer to design and maintain high-performance APIs for its Web3 payments platform in New York, NY. You will work on payments, settlement, asset conversion, and identity flows across chains, and contribute to architecture reviews and incident response.

The role emphasizes hands-on TS development, cloud-based infrastructure, and deep CS fundamentals to build reliable, scalable backend services for dApps and partners.

Our client is a high-growth technology company building next-generation digital payments infrastructure that enables secure, seamless, and intuitive value transfer experiences for both users and developers. Its products simplify complex transaction flows by allowing customers to move and utilize digital assets across multiple funding sources and payment channels through a unified experience.

About the Role

The Backend Engineering team designs and operates high-performance systems powering Checkout and the company's broader payments stack, handling payments, settlement, asset conversion, identity/security verification, and multi-chain transaction routing. You will report into the CTO (ex-Hyperlane, ex-Uniswap)

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain high-performance APIs and backend services for the company's Web3 payments platform.

Implement and evolve systems for payments, settlement, transaction routing, asset conversion, and identity/security flows across chains and providers.

Build new backend features that improve product experience, conversion, and reliability for dApps and partners.

Participate in system design, architecture reviews, and incident response to ensure reliability and fault tolerance.

Write clean, well-tested code and contribute to code reviews and engineering standards.

Requirements

Strong experience building production backend systems in a modern language (TypeScript preferred; Go or Rust acceptable for strong system engineers willing to work in TS).

Proficiency with TypeScript or clear ability and motivation to ramp quickly.

Deep understanding of distributed systems, APIs, and database design principles.

Hands-on experience with cloud platforms and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, modern cloud infra).

Solid CS fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and systems design.

Bonus Skill

Experience in payments, fintech infrastructure, or transaction-heavy consumer apps.

Prior exposure to blockchain integrations, smart contracts, or DeFi protocols.

Familiarity with event-driven architectures and real-time data processing.

Contributions to open source or technical writing in backend, infra, or crypto domains.
