Job summary

ARCTIC STORM MANAGEMENT GROUP LLC seeks an experienced Baader equipment technician to maintain, repair and monitor filleting gear aboard a processing vessel. You will work with QC to adjust for product size, train operators and perform safety procedures.

Responsibilities include preventative maintenance, part inventories, shipyard scheduling, and documenting work orders. Candidates must have Baader training or equivalent, LOTO knowledge, HACCP preferred, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• Formal training with Baader Accredited course provider or equivalent training and experiential knowledge in fish processing equipment, maintenance and repair.
• Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication/documentation.
• Lock Out/Tag Out training or ability to attain training certificate.
• HACCP Certification preferred.
• Continued education in processing equipment and implementation in the vessel factory environment.
• Experience with fabrication and equipment design as necessary.
• Adaptable to changes in product requirements and the need for equipment adjustment.

Responsibilities

• Schedule maintenance and labor for shipyard layup periods and oversee execution.
• Maintain knowledge of Baader safety updates and communicate with teams.
• Collaborate with supervisors, crew and vendors to ensure productive operations.
• Provide staffing and performance feedback for Baader Tech department.
• Attend planned meetings and training.

Job description

Maintains, repairs and monitors all Baader filleting equipment used in the production of fish products in an at-sea fish processing environment.

Primary Job Functions

• Continuously monitor and maintain all aspects of the Baader machine equipment used in the processing factory for efficiency and function.
• Works with Quality Control personnel to make adjustments as needed based on product requirements and fish size to ensure optimum equipment operation. Includes machine guides, knives, spike chains and sliding blocks.
• Assists with training Baader Machine operators in machine safety, Lock Out/Tag Out awareness and optimal machine performance.
• Makes all necessary maintenance and rebuild repairs of Baader machine mechanical equipment and electrical systems. Includes: switches, motors, controllers, generator, encoders, bearings, gearboxes, guides, pulleys and belt, chain and motor drives.
• Regularly tests systems and operation to ensure electrical and mechanical components are operating safely and within machine specifications.
• Maintains adequate inventory of parts onboard the vessel for repairs both at sea and in the shipyard.
• Identify and address worn or damaged equipment, communicating and documenting maintenance and parts needs with the appropriate departments.
• Schedules maintenance, repair and labor needs for shipyard layup periods. Oversee direction and implementation of shipyard maintenance and repair program, including documenting workflow, parts requisitions and inventory.
• Maintains a working knowledge of Baader equipment safety and systems updates.
• Communicate effectively and work as part of a team with supervisors, crew, office personnel and vendors to ensure a successful production operation environment.
• Provide staffing needs, rotation plans and performance feedback for Baader Tech department and trainees to the home office.
• Attend all planned meetings and training as required.

Safety

• Fulfill duties in a safe, efficient, manner and without jeopardy to self or others.
• Participate in required factory safety orientations and meetings and follow up instruction as necessary.
• Lead by example in the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and personal sanitation practices. Instruct processing crew in the requirements and uses of PPE.
• Employ and document all Lock Out/Tag Out protocol procedures within the factory environment both at sea and in shipyard.
• Maintain continued working knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment.
• Confirm only approved materials are used and available for cleanup and repair of machinery in accordance with their instructions and application.

Conditions On The Vessel

• Shifts are 12-16 hours per day, 7 days a week for the duration of the fishing contract.
• Contracts are seasonal, duration based on the season and the availability of fish.
• Conditions are regularly cold and wet and weather will cause the vessel to move unexpectedly during operation.
• Crewmembers provided with a bunk, mattress and locker in crew quarters.
• Crew lounge provides access to two computer kiosks for short-term usage during breaks.

Minimum Requirements

Physical And Mental Expectations

• Able to navigate steep stairways, gangways, Jacobs ladder and/or upper bunk unassisted.
• Dexterity: able to work while wearing gloves, rain gear, and maintain balance while walking/standing.
• Visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, capable of fine detail, and distance vision.
• Standing for long periods of time, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting/turning, hand eye coordination. Movements occasionally include lifting up to 60lbs, bending/stooping, squatting/kneeling, climbing and crawling.
• Regularly requires the ability to communicate direction and information, read and identify signs and alerts in English. Regularly requires symbol recognition and memorization.
• Able to adjust to shipboard working and living conditions in close quarters, far from home for long periods.

Employee Responsibility

• Employees taking medication or requiring eyeglasses or contacts need a backup pair/sufficient supply to last at least 90 days.
• Maintains physical and dental health in preparation for work at sea, far from medical facilities, pharmacies or dental services.
• Employees provide their own rain gear: boots, pants and jacket. Rain gear should be clean, waterproof and comfortable over clothing.
• Employees provide their own bedding: blanket, sheets and pillows. Large, thick blankets or sleeping bags require a removable duvet cover or sleeping bag liner for washing.
• Enough clothing, socks, warm layers, to last 8-9 days between laundry dates, lightweight shoes for crew lounge/eating areas, and toiletries for up to 90 days.
