Job summary

Arctic Storm Management Group, LLC seeks personnel to assist with the maintenance, repair, and monitoring of Baader filleting equipment aboard a seafood processing vessel. You will work under Baader Technicians to ensure safe operation and optimal production.

Responsibilities include supporting QC staff, training operators on safety, and contributing to repairs at sea and in shipyards, with shifts and seasonal contracts in a challenging marine environment.

Qualifications

  • Mechanical or electrical background with ability to follow specifications and use tools.
  • Experience as Baader Tech Assistant or Baader Machine driver in a fish-processing environment is preferred.
  • Fabrication or welding experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with continuous monitoring and maintenance of Baader equipment in the processing factory under supervision.
  • Develop knowledge of Baader equipment safety and systems.
  • Support Quality Control and Baader Technicians with adjustments to meet product requirements and fish size.
  • Assist in training Baader Machine operators on machine safety and Lock Out/Tag Out procedures.
  • Participate in maintenance and rebuilds of Baader machines and electrical systems, at sea and in shipyard.
  • Assist with system tests and operation to ensure electrical and mechanical components meet specifications.
  • Learn to identify worn or damaged equipment under Baader Technicians’ guidance.
  • Contribute to inventory programs ensuring spare parts onboard for repairs.

Job Description

Assists the Baader Department in the maintenance, repair and monitoring of all Baader filleting equipment used in the production of fish products in a seafood processing environment.

Primary Job Functions
  • Assist with the continuous monitoring and maintenance of all aspects of the Baader machine equipment used in the processing factory, as directed by the Baader Technicians.
  • Makes continual efforts to develop working knowledge of Baader equipment safety and systems.
  • Supports, as directed, Quality Control personnel and Baader Technicians with adjustments when needed based on product requirements and fish size to ensure optimum equipment operation.
  • Assists with training Baader Machine operators in machine safety, Lock Out/Tag Out awareness and optimal machine performance.
  • Participates in all necessary maintenance and rebuild repairs of Baader machines’ mechanical equipment and electrical systems, both at sea and in shipyard between seasons.
  • Assist Baader Technicians with systems tests and machine operation to ensure electrical and mechanical components are operating safely and within machine specifications.
  • Under the direction of the Baader Technicians, learns to identify, communicate and assist with addressing worn or damaged equipment.
  • Actively participates in inventory program ensuring adequate supply of parts onboard the vessel for repairs both at sea and in the shipyard.
  • Able to communicate effectively and work as part of a team with supervisors, crew, office personnel and vendors to ensure a successful production operation environment.
  • Attend all planned meetings and training as required.
Safety
  • Fulfill duties in a safe, efficient, manner and without jeopardy to self or others.
  • Participate in required factory safety orientations and meetings and follow up instruction as necessary.
  • Adhere to all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, maintaining personal PPE for both function and sanitation.
  • Follow all equipment, product and personal sanitation programs and practices.
  • Develop thorough knowledge of all Lock Out/Tag Out protocol procedures within the factory environment both at sea and in shipyard.
  • Maintain continued working knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment.
  • Confirm only approved materials are used and available for cleanup and repair of machinery in accordance with their instructions and application.

Conditions on the Vessel
  • Shifts are 12-16 hours per day, 7 days a week for the duration of the fishing contract.
  • Contracts are seasonal, duration based on the season and the availability of fish.
  • Conditions are regularly cold and wet and weather will cause the vessel to move unexpectedly during operation.
  • Crew members provided with a bunk, mattress and locker in crew quarters.
  • Crew lounge provides access to two computer kiosks for short-term usage during breaks.
Minimum Requirements

Preferred Skills

  • Mechanical and/or electrical background including ability to identify and use project appropriate specifications and tools.
  • Prior experience working as a Baader Tech Assistant or Baader Machine driver in a fish processing environment.
  • Experience with fabrication/welding a plus.
Physical and Mental Expectations
  • Able to navigate steep stairways, gangways, Jacob’s ladder and/or upper bunk unassisted.
  • Dexterity: able to work while wearing gloves, rain gear, and maintain balance while walking/standing.
  • Visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, capable of fine detail, and distance vision.
  • Standing for long periods of time, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting/turning, hand‑eye coordination. Movements occasionally include lifting up to 60 lbs, bending/stooping, squatting/kneeling, climbing and crawling.
  • Regularly requires the ability to communicate direction and information, read and identify signs and alerts in English. Regularly requires symbol recognition and memorization.
  • Able to adjust to shipboard working and living conditions in close quarters, far from home for long periods.
Employee Responsibility
  • Employees provide their own rain gear: boots, pants and jacket. Rain gear should be clean, waterproof and comfortable over clothing.
  • Employees must provide their own bedding: blanket, sheets and pillows. Large, thick blankets or sleeping bags require a removable duvet cover or sleeping bag liner for washing.
  • Employees taking medication or requiring eyeglasses or contacts need a backup pair/sufficient supply to last at least 90 days.
  • Maintains physical and dental health in preparation for work at sea, far from medical facilities, pharmacies or dental services.
  • Enough clothing, socks, warm layers, to last 8-9 days between laundry dates, lightweight shoes for crew lounge/eating areas, and toiletries for up to 90 days.
