Job summary

General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) seeks an AWS Cloud Engineer to support the NIAID team in Rockville, MD. The role covers the full delivery lifecycle, including IaC with AWS, CI/CD tooling, and administration of Windows Server, AD, and SQL Server.

Responsibilities include designing reliable AWS environments, building Terraform modules, and mentoring junior engineers. The role is hybrid with three onsite days per week in Rockville and requires Public Trust clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelors and 4+ years of relevant IT experience.
• Experience owning cloud infrastructure design and setting technical direction on complex initiatives.
• Experience translating customer requirements into implemented technical solutions.
• Hands-on AWS experience across compute, storage, networking, database, IAM, backup, and monitoring services.
• Experience with Terraform for infrastructure as code.
• Strong software development background to build automation tools or lightweight services.
• Strong PowerShell skills with working proficiency in Python.
• Deep Windows Server engineering experience and root cause analysis.
• Experience administering Active Directory (AD DS, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, certificate services).
• Experience administering SQL Server, including backup/recovery, HA, and RDS administration.
• Understanding of AWS networking (VPC, routing, security groups, load balancing).
• Experience with observability and incident response using Datadog or CloudWatch.
• Ability to work under formal change control on production systems.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to explain technical solutions to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain highly available AWS environments for reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
• Build and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform and pipelines.
• Develop automation tooling and internal applications to streamline provisioning and operations.
• Create developer-facing tooling and self-service capabilities to accelerate delivery.
• Administer Windows Server and perform performance tuning and root cause analysis.
• Administer Active Directory and integration with AWS Managed Microsoft AD.
• Administer SQL Server on EC2 and RDS with backup/recovery and high availability.
• Support migration of Windows and SQL workloads to AWS.
• Monitor system health with Datadog and CloudWatch; drive incident response and reliability improvements.
• Lead root cause analyses and act as escalation point for complex incidents.
• Maintain backup/DR configurations and participate in restore testing.
• Perform capacity planning, cost optimization, and resource tagging.
• Develop technical documentation and mentor junior engineers.
• Apply AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate IaC development.
