Job summary

George Mason University’s Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Impact seeks an Associate Vice President to lead the development of an environment that enables faculty to identify, pursue, and secure external funding and partnerships.

Reporting to the VPRIEI, the AVP drives strategic planning, oversees Research Development Services, and builds collaborations with federal agencies, industry, and foundations to scale multidisciplinary research and translational impact.

Qualifications

• Terminal degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least 5 years of experience developing and supporting university research programs.
• Experience interfacing with federal funding agencies.
• Experience collaborating with external partners to expand research capacity.
• Knowledge of university-based research initiatives and team science.
• Knowledge of the federal and non-federal funding landscape.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to lead multiple initiatives concurrently.
• Ability to discuss research priorities across disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Identify opportunities and develop a strategic approach to securing external funding.
• Engage with external partners to advance GMU's research enterprise.
• Oversee implementation of the Grand Challenge Initiative and related launches.
• Develop and lead strategic external partnerships with agencies, industry, foundations.
• Provide strategic direction to Research Development Services and enable proposal development.
• Coordinate with campus offices to align strategy and resources.
• Serve on and lead university committees and working groups.
