Job summary

George Mason University is seeking an Associate Vice President, Research and Innovation Initiatives to lead the university's external funding strategies, advance multidisciplinary research, and align programs with the Mason Strategy.

Reporting to the VPRIEI, the AVP will manage Research Development Services, cultivate partnerships with federal agencies, industry, and foundations, and collaborate across colleges to scale major awards and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

Terminal degree in related field.
At least 5 years of experience developing and supporting research programs at a university.
Experience interfacing with external funding agencies.
Experience collaborating with industry and philanthropy to expand research capacity.
Knowledge of university-based research initiatives and proposal development.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to lead multiple initiatives concurrently.
Ability to discuss research priorities across disciplines.

Responsibilities

Understand opportunities and challenges in external funding; develop strategic plans with VPRIEI and faculty.
Represent the university at external meetings to position Mason as a major research university.
Oversee and implement the Grand Challenge Initiative and related programs.
Identify and cultivate external partnerships with federal agencies, industry, foundations.
Provide leadership to the Research Development Services team to enable proposal development.
Coordinate with Office of Federal Relations and other stakeholders on funding requests.
Serve on university working groups and committees as assigned.
