Job description

Overview

The AVP, Enterprise Architecture is a senior technology leader responsible for defining and driving the enterprise architecture strategy across business capabilities, applications, data, cloud, cybersecurity, integration, AI, and digital platforms. This role serves as the enterprise architecture authority for a multi‑member shared services environment supporting multiple mutual insurance companies across Personal and Commercial P&C lines of business. The leader will shape the target‑state architecture for scalable, reusable, and secure platforms that can support policy, billing, claims, underwriting, distribution, customer experience, agent experience, data, and AI‑enabled business processes. The position is critical in advancing a multi‑member platform strategy that enables business flexibility, operating leverage, common capabilities, and controlled member‑specific variation across the mutual insurance model.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Enterprise Architecture Strategy and Leadership
    • Define and lead the enterprise architecture strategy across business, application, data, integration, cloud, security, and AI architecture.
    • Create and maintain current‑state and target‑state architecture blueprints, capability maps, platform roadmaps, reference architecture, and modernization plans.
    • Serve as senior architecture advisor to the CITO and technology leadership team, providing clear recommendations on major platform, modernization, integration, vendor, and investment decisions.
  • Multi‑Member P&C Platform Architecture
    • Lead the architecture strategy for a scalable multi‑member platform supporting Personal and Commercial P&C lines of business across policy administration, billing, claims, underwriting, rating, forms, documents, data, reporting, and digital channels.
    • Define common enterprise capabilities that can be reused across member companies while allowing appropriate member‑specific configuration, product variation, regulatory variation, and operational flexibility.
    • Guide architecture decisions for core insurance platforms, including Guidewire PolicyCenter, BillingCenter, ClaimCenter, digital portals, customer communications, underwriting workbenches, data platforms, and integration layers.
    • Drive platform rationalization, simplification, and reuse to reduce duplication, improve maintainability, and create a foundation for onboarding future mutual members efficiently.
  • M&A and New Member Integration
    • Provide architecture leadership for M&A, affiliation, onboarding, or integration of new P&C insurance companies into the shared services and technology platform model.
    • Define integration patterns for acquired or affiliated companies, including data migration, system interoperability, platform onboarding, identity and access, reporting, business process alignment, and technology rationalization.
    • Partner with business, operations, finance, legal, security, data, and delivery teams to evaluate technology implications of new member onboarding and ensure integration plans are scalable, secure, and executable.
    • Develop repeatable playbooks and architectural standards for integrating new companies, products, books of business, and operational capabilities into the enterprise platform.
  • Architecture Governance and Standards
    • Lead the Architecture Review Board and related governance forums, establishing clear standards, decision rights, exception processes, architecture principles, and documentation expectations.
    • Review major solutions, vendor platforms, integration designs, cloud architectures, data flows, security patterns, and AI‑enabled capabilities to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards.
    • Track architecture health through metrics such as platform reuse, technical debt reduction, application rationalization, integration reuse, security compliance, resiliency, and delivery acceleration.
  • Cloud, Integration, Data, AI, and Security Architecture
    • Guide cloud‑native and hybrid architecture across AWS, Azure, infrastructure‑as‑code, containers, observability, DevSecOps, resilience, disaster recovery, and operational supportability.
    • Drive API‑first, event‑driven, and modular integration patterns using modern integration technologies, middleware, APIs, messaging, and data exchange standards.
    • Lead enterprise data architecture direction, including data domains, canonical models, master and reference data, lineage, metadata, data quality, reporting, analytics, and AI readiness.
    • Define AI‑first architecture patterns for intelligent automation, document processing, underwriting, claims, customer service, software delivery, and IT operations with appropriate human‑in‑the‑loop, auditability, privacy, and governance controls.
    • Partner with cybersecurity, risk, and compliance teams to embed security‑by‑design, zero trust, privacy, regulatory compliance, and secure SDLC practices into enterprise architecture.
  • Executive Partnership and Team Leadership
    • Partner with business executives, product leaders, engineering teams, security, infrastructure, data, operations, vendors, and SI partners to align priorities, resolve tradeoffs, and remove architectural blockers.
    • Build, coach, and develop architecture talent across enterprise, solution, data, integration, cloud, security, and application architecture disciplines.
    • Establish architecture communities of practice, reusable playbooks, standards, and patterns that raise architecture maturity across technology delivery teams.
    • Lead from the front by staying close to complex initiatives, challenging assumptions, simplifying complexity, and ensuring architecture decisions translate into measurable business and technology outcomes.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive technology and architecture experience, including 7+ years in enterprise architecture, solution architecture, or architecture leadership roles.
  • Strong experience in P&C insurance, including policy, billing, claims, underwriting, rating, distribution, documents, customer/agent experience, and regulatory considerations.
  • Hands‑on experience with core insurance platforms such as Guidewire, Duck Creek, Insurity, or similar; multi‑platform experience preferred.
  • Experience designing or leading multi‑tenant, multi‑member, shared services, or platform‑based architectures across multiple business entities.
  • Experience with M&A, affiliation, onboarding, or integration of P&C insurance companies, including platform consolidation, data migration, system integration, and operating model alignment.
  • Strong technical fluency across cloud platforms, APIs, event‑driven architecture, data platforms, AI/ML integration, cybersecurity, DevSecOps, observability, and modern engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives, partner with business leaders, lead architecture governance, and make sound tradeoff decisions across cost, speed, risk, scalability, and business value.
  • Strong leadership qualities, including hands‑on leadership, thought leadership, analytical reasoning, meticulous planning, delivery ownership, collaboration, and the ability to build high‑performing architecture teams.
  • Security, privacy, customer experience, and business outcome mindset, with a practical approach to building scalable, reusable, and resilient enterprise platforms.
