Job summary

Nationwide Mutual Insurance seeks an Assistant Vice President for Contingent Liability Legal – P&C to provide strategic leadership and senior guidance on high‑risk contingent-liability matters. This role partners with Claims, Finance, Underwriting, and Compliance to align governance, exposure, and outcomes with Nationwide’s objectives.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
• 10–15 years of relevant legal and P&C insurance experience.
• Strong business and financial acumen with excellent written and verbal skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal opinions and counsel to senior management on prospective litigation and exposure.
• Lead contingent litigation strategy and oversee risk avoidance and mitigation.
• Establish loss and expense reserves and produce monthly/quarterly reporting.
• Coordinate outside counsel, retention terms, budgets, discovery strategy and settlements.
