Job summary

Salem-Keizer Public Schools is seeking AVID tutors to support students in developing college and career readiness through focused, small-group tutorials using Socratic questioning and collaborative learning. AVID tutorials take place in subject-area groups, and tutors help students achieve their full potential.

Tutors act as role models, provide feedback, support AVID scholars with care and connection, and help maintain a positive classroom tone.

Qualifications

• AVID tutors should be excellent role models of motivated, organized, successful college students who believe that the AVID students will succeed, too.
• As a tutor, you will work with secondary students in a supportive manner and be accountable to the teacher.
• Conduct in-person tutorial sessions that underscore collaborative learning and peer teaching from class notes.
• Identify concepts to focus tutorials from student worksheets and notes.
• Allow students to take ownership of their own active learning while guiding them with independent strategies.
• Assist students in any subject area, using AVID classroom resources and textbooks.
• Provide constructive feedback on student work, in-person or online.
• Support AVID scholars through care and connection and maintain a positive tone in the classroom.
• Assist the AVID coordinator with tasks such as contacting teachers, arranging course outlines and schedules.
• Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and concerns.
• Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students.

Responsibilities

• Conduct in-person tutorial sessions that underscore collaborative learning and peer teaching from notes.
• Determine from student worksheets and discussions the concepts to focus on in tutorials.
• Encourage students to shoulder responsibility for their own learning while guiding them with independent strategies.
• Assist students across subjects, using AVID classroom resources and textbooks.
• Provide constructive feedback on student work, online or in-person.
• Support AVID scholars through care, connection, and a positive classroom atmosphere.
