Job summary

Texas A&M Forest Service in College Station seeks a Program Specialist II (Fire Information & Education) to advance wildfire information and education, including communications about aerial firefighting operations and aviation resources.

You will develop outreach strategies, serve as a public information officer, write and edit policy communications, and coordinate with communities, media and agencies to improve fire safety and prevention messaging.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Communications, Range Science, Natural Resource Management, Fire Management, Fire Ecology, Agricultural Leadership or a closely related field is required.
  • A minimum of two years' experience with internal and external communications relating to emergency and wildfire incidents, including writing, editing and producing material.
  • Experience with aviation operations and terminology is preferred.
  • Experience coordinating with homeowners, media, and agencies for information and education is preferred.
  • A valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain within 180 days of employment is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate and educate internal and external audiences about agency aviation operations, aerial firefighting, wildfire and prevention—develop outreach strategies.
  • Serve as a public information officer and respond to requests for accurate and timely information.
  • Work with prevention and post-fire assessment teams and other response operations.
  • Write, edit and produce official communications, press releases and reports.
  • Coordinate collection of photos, videos and content for social media, websites and reports.
  • Provide leadership and support to agency public information officers and facilitate development opportunities.
  • Coordinate among departments to integrate fire communication and education into division projects.
