How You’ll Contribute
The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project called Base Camp, to be completed in 2026. Components of the new guest experience include a pavilion entrance, auditorium, photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and event space. The renovation's highlight will be a unique nighttime courtyard experience.
Job Description Summary
The AV Technician, Experience Technology, is responsible for installing, operating, maintaining, and de-installing audio, video, lighting, and networking hardware for exhibitions and experiences, including permanent and traveling exhibits. Reporting to the Manager, Exhibition AV Technology, they will ensure zero downtime and serve as a subject matter expert in AV, Lighting, and IT solutions, contributing to the design and technical support of exhibits.
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
Operate AVL systems for exhibitions and events, ensuring smooth operation in dynamic spaces.
Troubleshoot AVL issues promptly to maintain zero downtime.
Manage contracted AV labor for various exhibits, maintaining high standards.
Set up and operate sound consoles, broadcast equipment, and IT networks for events.
Operate and troubleshoot sitewide AVL control systems.
Collaborate with teams to optimize procedures and advise on technical design.
Assist during construction and touring exhibit installations.
Reporting and Data Management
Track maintenance requests and analyze trends to prevent failures.
Coordinate with the IT team to resolve network issues.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor’s degree in audiovisual engineering or related field, or equivalent experience and certifications.
Experience
At least 4 years of hands-on experience with AV, lighting, and show control systems.
Knowledge of IT and networking is a plus.
Skills and Knowledge
Expertise in video, audio, and lighting systems, including protocols like sACN, DMX, Dante, and broadcast engineering.
Ability to prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and interact positively across teams.
Physical ability to install, maintain, operate AV equipment, and work at heights.
Travel
Up to 10 weeks annually for installations and deinstallations.

Contractors.
Salary Range
$29.24 - $30.77 hourly, with comprehensive benefits including health, retirement, paid time off, and more.
Job Designation
Resident - flexibility in onsite presence depending on role requirements.
