How You’ll Contribute

The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026. Components of the new guest experience will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard.

Job Description Summary

The AV Technician, Experience Technology is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and de-installation of audio, video, lighting, and networking hardware for National Geographic Society’s exhibitions and experiences, including permanent and traveling exhibits. They will report to the Manager, Exhibition AV Technology, and ensure zero downtime for all AV systems, acting as a subject matter expert in AV, Lighting, and IT solutions.

The role involves collaborating with the larger Experience Technology team, advising on technical design, and supporting the installation and maintenance of AV systems during construction and touring exhibitions.

Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
  • Operate audio, video, lighting, and control systems for exhibitions and events
  • Troubleshoot AV issues to maintain zero downtime
  • Manage contracted AV labor for various exhibitions
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and strike digital sound consoles, broadcast equipment, and IT networks
  • Operate and troubleshoot sitewide AVL control systems
  • Collaborate with teams to ensure optimal operation of all spaces
Reporting and Data Management
  • Track and report maintenance and service requests
  • Coordinate with the IT team for network issues
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Engineering or related; 4+ years of hands-on AV experience; certifications and relevant experience considered.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Deep knowledge of video, audio, lighting, and show control systems
  • Understanding of industry best practices and current products
  • Ability to work under pressure, install and operate AV equipment, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Travel

Up to 10 weeks per year for exhibit installation and deinstallation.

Salary and Benefits

Hourly rate: $29.24 - $30.77. Offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and more.

Job Designation

Resident – flexible onsite presence depending on role requirements.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and applications are encouraged even if not a perfect match.
