The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is seeking an AV MES Technician to lead the audio, video, and lighting systems for immersive exhibits. You will collaborate with project teams, external partners, and production staff to design, install, and maintain shows, while documenting configurations and procedures.

This role requires strong problem-solving, reliability, and customer-focused service for visitors and staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer technology, engineering, AV systems, or related field.
• Four (4) years of AV industry and related experience; museum/venue preferred.
• CTS Certification through InfoComm or similar technical education.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and some holidays.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment with diplomacy and professionalism.
• Knowledge of computer, network, and electrical technologies.
• Ability to work independently with high accountability and reliability.

Job description

The AV Modular Exhibit System (MES) Technician for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Inc. is responsible for the audio, video, and lighting technology installation and maintenance components of the MES. The incumbent collaborates with project teams to understand needs and provides recommendations for system layout, system functionality, GUI interface, lighting, etc. They act as lead system tech to address escalated technical issues. The technician works in concert with external partner(s) to address problems and design new shows. The technician develops and maintains system documentation and provides exceptional customer service to visitors, staff, volunteers, contractors and vendors. They assist with other AV projects, maintenance, and tickets as needed.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Acts as AV team lead and oversees daily operation of the MES to ensure optimal technology functionality.
• Works with project team and external partner SAND to develop and implement new shows. Services, troubleshoots, installs, and configures MES shows. Proactively seeks ways to enhance exhibit elements to improve the visitor experience.
• Works to support MES operations colleagues with AV tech issues outside of their skill set. Works with SAND support to elevate and resolve system and tech issues. Works with SAND to update MES documentation as system changes are implemented.
• Trains colleagues on MES operations to ensure consistent onboarding and education about MES basic controls and troubleshooting.
• Works with computers, projectors, lighting, speakers, sensors, etc. to ensure the immersive projection space is functioning on a daily basis.
• Performs gallery technology startup, shutdown, and repair. Performs scheduled maintenance and gallery installations. Assists with AV and production projects, maintenance, and tickets as needed.
• Participates in gallery evaluation for technology integration that includes calculating display screen sizes, audio and acoustic requirements and lighting needs.
• Installs, sets up, and/or configures audio mixing consoles, microphones, switchers and amplifiers, as needed.
• Coordinates and participates in input and tracking of daily work through the IIT Help Ticketing system for ongoing communication with internal customers. Utilizes existing systems and maintains accurate records of repairs, maintenance, equipment usage and supply usage.
• Engages in IT and IP programming and testing of intermediate to advanced audiovisual systems audio components, computers, video components, lighting systems, and display/projection equipment as well as services, troubleshoots, installs and configures audio mixing consoles, microphones, switchers and amplifiers.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer technology, engineering, AV Systems, design or a related field preferred.
• Four (4) years of AV industry, as well as technology services, stagehand, and/or operations experience; preferably in a museum or large-scale venue.
• Specialist (CTS) Certification through InfoComm or similar technical education.
• Demands high level of attention to detail and the ability to work with and meet strict deadlines.
• The demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a diverse work environment. Must be able to impart diplomacy and professionalism in all situations.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and some holidays.
• Must have knowledge and experience regarding the configuration, assembly, and operation of computer, network, industrial and electrical technologies.
• Ability to work in a self-directed manner with a minimum of explicit structure and guidelines, but with very high levels of accountability and reliability. The ability to work independently yet understand how and when to seek information and direction.
• Strong logic, analytical, problem resolution, and communication (both written and verbal) skills.
• Experience in low voltage service and cable and device termination.
• Ability to operate a scissor lift and work at height as needed; lift training and certification can be attained on the job.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to view computer monitor, reports, manuals, and observe sound and lighting equipment.
• Must be able to communicate extensively and effectively via telephone/TDD, virtually, face to face conversations and two-way radio.
• Requires dexterity and fine motor abilities for extensive use of computer keyboards, various lighting, sound, and control equipment, interactive media and video systems. Ability to engage in the safe use of heavy power tools, electrical instruments, lift operations and AV maintenance.
• Must be able to work in confined spaces and heights. Must be able to tolerate dust in the environment.
• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, negotiate stairs, work in confined spaces and at heights. Must also be able to bend, kneel, climb, reach and physically lift up to 50 lbs.
