Job description

About the Role

Uber is launching AV Labs to accelerate the autonomous technology ecosystem. We're building out a high-velocity team of multi-disciplinary experts to turn real-world operations into high-quality data for our autonomous partners. This team is focused on the hardest problem in AV today: unlocking real-world, long-tail driving data. Autonomy is now a data race—and Uber has an edge: We collect rare, real-world driving data at a scale and capital efficiency no one else can match.

As an AV Fleet Technician, you will serve as a line-side floor captain and electromechanical escalation lead for our high-velocity Autonomous Vehicle (AV)data collection fleet. Operating directly on the depot floor, you will isolate complex hardware, electrical, and data-link faults across dense L4 perception stacks (LiDAR, Radar, Camera arrays, CAN/Automotive Ethernet), validate incoming data collection vehicle upfits from contract manufacturers, and direct third-party contractor teams to maintain peak fleet readiness. This role is ideal for a battle-tested vehicle or robotics lead who excels at physical root-cause triage, Linux-assisted diagnostics, sensor calibration, and hands-on floor execution.

What You’ll Do

  • Line-Side Floor Leadership: Serve as the onsite floor captain during daily shift operations; lead contractor technicians (EXTs) in executing pre/post-drive staging, sensor calibrations, and vehicle turnarounds.

  • Electromechanical & Physical Triage: Act as the local escalation point for complex hardware and electrical faults. Isolate failure modes across dense sensor suites (LiDAR, Radar, Cameras, IMUs), vehicle compute nodes, power distribution units, and custom wire harnesses.

  • Upfit Validation: Perform incoming hardware quality checks on newly upfitted vehicles from contract manufacturing partners (e.g., Roush), ensuring harness routing, connector seating, pinouts, and mechanical mountings meet engineering specs.

  • Sensor Calibration & Maintenance: Oversee physical alignment and software-driven calibration routines for camera arrays, LiDARs, and Radars using specialized targets and calibration rigs.

  • Linux CLI Execution: Navigate Linux terminals to execute health-check scripts, inspect log files (dmesg, journalctl), verify network interface states, and flash component firmware.

  • SOP Audit & Process Improvement: Partner with L5A Senior Engineers to audit shop-floor playbooks, identify operational bottlenecks, and provide feedback to improve vehicle serviceability and poka-yoke (error-proofing) procedures.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in advanced electromechanical maintenance, autonomous vehicle depot operations, aerospace testing, or complex hardware validation.

  • AV Industry & Multi-Platform Experience: Prior experience working directly within autonomous vehicle companies with hands-on background supporting and troubleshooting multiple vehicle platforms.

  • Deep Electromechanical Mastery: Proven ability to troubleshoot complex physical hardware, automotive wire harnesses, custom connectors (FAKRA, Rosenberger, Amphenol), power distribution, and data links (CAN bus, Automotive Ethernet, GMSL).

  • AV Perception Hardware Exposure: Hands-on experience mounting, swapping, or troubleshooting autonomous perception suites (LiDAR, Radar, Camera arrays, GPS/IMU).

  • Linux CLI Fluency: Comfortable navigating Linux command-line environments to run pre-written diagnostic tools, parse logs, check system processes, and flash component firmware.

  • Communication & Leadership: Demonstrated capability to lead contractor/vendor technicians on the floor, enforce quality standards, and clearly articulate technical failure modes to engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working directly within an AV fleet depot (Waymo, Cruise, Zoox, Nuro, Aurora, Kodiak) or advanced robotics flight/test facility.

  • Experience validating incoming vehicle upfits or retrofits from automotive contract manufacturers (e.g., Roush, Pratt Miller).

  • Proficiency using basic electrical tools (multimeters, wire crimpers, pinout extractors, TDRs) and network bus analyzers (candump, Wireshark).
