Job summary

Warfare Systems (WS) within HII’s Mission Technologies division invites interns for Summer 2027 to develop software for unmanned aerial systems. The role focuses on autonomous drone capabilities and integration with defense, national security, and commercial missions.

You will collaborate with systems engineers, flight software and autonomy engineers, and testers to design, implement, and test software for UAS platforms in a hands-on environment in Crane, Indiana.

Qualifications

• Foundational programming in Python, C++, or Java.
• Interest in UAS, robotics, autonomy, or embedded systems.
• Understanding of software engineering fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, debugging, and Git.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills with ability to learn new tools quickly.
• Ability to collaborate in a team environment and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the design, development, integration, and testing of software for UAS platforms.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary teams including systems engineers, flight software developers, autonomy/AI engineers, and test personnel.
• Contribute to development of mission planning tools, sensor integration, navigation algorithms, and ground control interfaces.
• Support debugging, code reviews, documentation, and version control workflows.
• Participate in lab, simulation, and/or field testing activities for UAS hardware and software as assigned.
• Research emerging technologies relevant to autonomy, computer vision, perception, and UAS systems.
