Job summary

Blitz Team in Logan, Utah is seeking a Safety Engineer to ensure autonomous machinery is safe from design through deployment. You will review mechanical, electrical, control, and software designs for safety and lead hazard analyses across HARA, STPA, FMEA, and FTA.

Travel up to 25% domestically and internationally; develop safety requirements, verification plans, and safety documentation; mentor engineers, collaborate across disciplines, and support audits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety, or a related technical field with hands-on experience considered in lieu of a degree.
• 3+ years engineering work with safety of machines in industrial environments; 5+ years preferred.
• Candidates from maintenance, controls, industrial or manufacturing engineering with safety focus are welcome.
• Experience identifying hazards on real equipment/sites and implementing protective measures.
• Ability to perform machinery risk assessments and define mitigation hierarchies.
• Ability to write testable safety requirements and verify them by testing.
• Experience assessing sites for hazards from mobile equipment and workers sharing space.
• Strong judgment to defend safety arguments with engineers and leadership.
• Hands-on measurements, tool use, electrical schematics, and safety device verification.
• Willingness to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally; MSHA training helpful.

Responsibilities

• Review mechanical, electrical, control, and software designs for safety and lead safety reviews.
• Conduct hazard and risk analyses (HARA, STPA, FMEA, FTA) on machine systems and control architectures.
• Derive safety requirements from analyses and ensure traceability and verifiability.
• Determine safety function performance levels and confirm design meets them.
• Develop verification and test plans for safety functions and review evidence.
• Maintain safety documentation and support internal/external audits.
• Travel to customer sites to assess operating environments and risks.
• Author site safety plans, including boundaries, zones, and emergency stop architecture.
