Job summary

The Personnel Board of Jefferson County is seeking Automotive Technicians to perform journeyman-level mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light trucks, and gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment. Work orders guide tasks and supervision ensures quality and policy compliance.

Responsibilities include inspecting equipment, performing repairs with independent judgment, and providing guidance to less experienced staff.

Qualifications

  • Requires a driver's license and relevant certification or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience diagnosing gasoline/diesel engines with manual tools and gauges.
  • Experience diagnosing engines with scan tools or computers.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing brake systems and suspension.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor bodywork on rolling stock as needed.
  • Maintains and repairs hydraulic systems (braking systems, lifts, backhoes, loaders).
  • Inspects equipment before and after repairs and reads manuals for guidance.
  • Fabricates parts for equipment and rolling stock.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and tune-ups on diverse vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs or maintains tires and retrieves equipment from worksites.

Job Summary

Automotive Technicians working within the Merit System performs journeyman-level mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light trucks, and gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment. Inspects equipment to identify maintenance and repair needs and performs repairs using independent judgment and established practices. Receives assignments through work orders or supervisors and may provide guidance to less experienced employees. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed for technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with policies and established practices.

Applications for this position will be considered for the following Merit System employing agencies. The pay range for this job varies depending upon the Merit System employing agency.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Driver's license.
  • Completed coursework/certification program OR gained work experience in the following areas:
  • Diagnosing problems with gasoline or diesel engines using manual tools and gauges.
  • Diagnosing problems with gasoline or diesel engines using scan tools or a computer.
  • Diagnosing and repairing brake systems.
  • Diagnosing front and/or rear suspension problems (e.g. inside tire wear, trailer arms, tie rod, upper and lower control arms or differentials, etc.).
Typical Job Duties
  • Performs minor bodywork on rolling stock as needed.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on hydraulic systems (e.g. braking systems, lifts, backhoes, loaders).
  • Inspects equipment/rolling stock before and after completing work and reads reference materials to guide maintenance and repairs.
  • Fabricates parts for equipment and/or rolling stock.
  • Performs preventive maintenance (PM) and tune-ups on rolling stock such as cars and light trucks, heavy trucks (e.g., street sweeper, bucket truck), and/or heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozer, backhoe) based on each vehicle’s or equipment’s PM schedule.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on law enforcement, fire department, and other emergency equipment.
  • Performs repairs on cars and light trucks, heavy trucks (e.g., street sweeper, bucket truck), and/or heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozer, backhoe) as needed.
  • Maintains building, grounds, and equipment.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on small air-cooled engines such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, motorcycles, generators.
  • Repairs or replaces tires on equipment/rolling stock using appropriate tools and apparatus.
  • Goes to worksites to retrieve equipment or make repairs.
Physical Demands

Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or walking. Involves lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Work involves the ability to read small numbers and letters on meters.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as workshop and involves the use of electrical, gas, or air-powered tools and equipment such as metal cutters, welding equipment, and pneumatic wrench. Work may be conducted in cramped work spaces requiring extended periods in contorted body positions and exposure to contaminates such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals, and to potential mechanical and moving vehicle hazards. Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold), working around uneven, cluttered, and slippery surfaces, high vibration and loud noise (e.g. industrial and repair equipment).
