Job description

This position announcement is for an Automotive Mechanic, a full-time Civil Service position in the Metro General Services department, performing skilled repair and maintenance work on light duty motor vehicles (automobiles and trucks with GVWR of 19,900 or less) and related equipment. Performs related duties as required.

The men and women in Metro's General Services Department ensure the rest of government functions smoothly. From maintaining city vehicles and buildings to providing printing services, General Services supports other Metro departments in achieving their missions.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects in motor vehicles and related equipment.
  2. Maintain engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electrical, and other automotive systems.
  3. Repair or replace worn or defective parts.
  4. Perform tune-ups, emissions tests, and adjust carburetors and fuel injection systems.
  5. Road test vehicles before and after repairs.
  6. Complete work orders, parts requests, and acquire parts from stock.
  7. Deliver vehicles for specialized maintenance and warranty repairs.
  8. Maintain tools and keep the shop area clean and organized.
  9. Follow safety rules and regulations.
  10. Use road maps and manuals accurately.
  11. Optional tasks include brake lathe and tire balancing.
  12. Attend seminars and training as needed.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience repairing light duty motor vehicles.
  • OR High School Diploma or GED and completion of Automotive Repair studies from an accredited trade school.

Licenses Required: Valid Driver License. Employee must furnish proper tools.

Note: Employees may be automatically upgraded to the Automotive Mechanic - Certified classification if all criteria are met.

Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078, all employees must be residents of Tennessee or become residents within six months of employment.

Preferred experience includes installing, analyzing data with diagnostic equipment, and using hand and pneumatic tools, brake lathes, and related repair equipment.
