Job summary

Ohio Technical College is seeking an Automotive Instructor to lead hands-on automotive training and classroom instruction. The role involves preparing lesson plans, conducting assessments, and maintaining a safe learning environment in a dedicated training shop.

The instructor will deliver lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises, grade student work, and keep detailed student records while upholding college policies and expectations for professional conduct.

Qualifications

  • ASE and EPA certifications preferred or required.
  • Proven ability to teach automotive topics and manage a shop.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential.
  • Experience with classroom and hands-on instruction is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for classroom instruction with strong organization and planning.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
  • Provide students opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using lectures, discussions, and shop demonstrations.
  • Maintain a professional and positive image for students.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter.
  • Grade class work and provide evaluative feedback.
  • Utilize computers, AV aids, and equipment to supplement lessons.
  • Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration.
  • Complete student records as required by policy.
  • Assist in curricular planning and improvement.
  • Evaluate student performance against industry standards such as ASE where applicable.
  • Enforce college policies and rules.
  • Manage classroom materials and inventory.
  • Maintain certifications and credentials for department.
  • Provide evidence of professional growth and technical update activities.
  • Encourage students to pursue further learning opportunities.

Job Description

A automotive instructor specializes in teaching automotive-related courses, from basic knowledge to hands‑on maintenance training. Their job entails preparing lesson plans and coursework materials, conducting quizzes and examinations, arranging activities and demonstrations, grading the students' performances, monitoring the students' progress, maintaining records, and assisting the students as needed. Moreover, when it comes to hands‑on activities, an automotive instructor must deliver clear instructions and enforce policies and regulations to keep a safe and effective learning environment for everyone.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Prepare for classroom instruction by applying strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
  • Provide students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and professionally presented task demonstrations in the shop.
  • Maintain a professional and positive image for students.
  • Demonstrate competent knowledge of subject matter.
  • Assign and grade class work and homework and provide evaluative feedback to students.
  • Utilize computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations and demonstrations.
  • Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration.
  • Complete student records as required by laws, college policies and administrative regulations.
  • Assist in assessing curricular needs and offer plans for improvement.
  • Evaluate student performance against industry standards, ASE, as applicable.
  • Enforce all college policies and rules governing students.
  • Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Obtain and maintain all required professional certifications and credentials for the department and subjects taught.
  • Provide evidence of professional growth activity and technical update activity to maintain and to develop as an outstanding instructor.
  • Prepare students for later educational experiences by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
