About this Opportunity

This role provides technical mechanical services for the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and automotive equipment.

The City of Cedar Rapids does not sponsor employment authorization.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Rebuilds, repairs, and replaces engines, transmissions, differentials in various vehicles and equipment.
  2. Rebuilds and repairs sweepers, salt spreaders, carburetors, generators, starters, and other moving parts.
  3. Diagnoses engine problems.
  4. Performs complete engine overhauls.
  5. Repairs suspension, hydraulic, electrical systems, and hydraulic braking systems.
  6. Adheres to City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  7. Attends work regularly at the designated place and time.
  8. Supports continuous process improvement initiatives.
  9. Maintains consistent attendance.
  10. Performs related work as required.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma and 1 to 3 years of experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g., one year of relevant experience equals one year of education).
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations.

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B with passenger and air brake endorsements and a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate within one year of hire.
  • AC EPA Section 609 Certification and EPA Section 608 Type II Certification within 6 months.

Desired Qualifications

  • Diesel engine experience.

Work Schedule

  • Tuesday-Saturday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Employees completing two years as an Automotive Equipment Mechanic I and meeting testing qualifications will advance to an Automotive Equipment Mechanic II.

Hourly Rate

The starting wage for this position is $26.43 per hour, with scheduled increases based on years of service, and includes benefits such as a tool allowance and uniforms. The pay scale is as follows:
