Job summary

Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy, Utah is seeking a full-time Automation Technician to operate and maintain automated show elements and control systems across its venues. You will work with automation consoles during performances, perform routine maintenance, inspect rigging, and support installations and special projects.

Ideal candidates have 2+ years of experience with theatrical automation (TAIT Navigator preferred), strong problem‑solving skills, and the ability to work a demanding schedule

Our Automation team supports multiple venues and collaborates closely with creative and technical departments to deliver safe, innovative, and technically seamless live performances. Responsibilities

As a full-time Automation Technician, you will be an integral part of the Automation team, responsible for operating and maintaining automated show elements and control systems within the theaters at the Mountain America Performing Arts Center for Hale Centre Theatre. Your duties will include operating automation consoles during performances and performing automation maintenance tasks such as inspecting scenery and rigging, assisting with show installations, supporting special projects, and conducting preventative maintenance.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Operate the automation control console in a safe and consistent manner for performances, performer/technician training, and maintenance operations.
  • Complete all required documentation such as pre‑show checklists as directed.
  • Report issues occurred during performances in applicable logs and/or designated reporting methods
  • Assist with maintenance and routine safety inspections on automation equipment and systems
  • Assist with rigging tasks and projects during show strikes and installations
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of all Automation Department equipment
  • Participate in department trainings and development processes
  • Troubleshoot electrical, software, and mechanical problems should they arise
  • Work with other technical departments to maintain safety policies and procedures for maintenance, training, performer rescues, and performances
  • Perform other duties assigned by HCT leadership
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • 2+ years of operational experience with theatrical automation systems. (TAIT Navigator is a bonus)
  • 2+ years of experience working and/or maintaining large-scale theatrical productions
  • 1+ years of experience working with theatrical rigging elements
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in automation, theatre or a related field.
  • Understanding of the various elements of the theatre process – production, technical and performance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge and usage of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills – detail oriented.
  • Ability to problem‑solve and facilitate solutions to issues.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt rapidly when required
  • Ability to work productively under time pressures and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise excellent decision‑making skills.
  • High level of computer proficiency with knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets.
  • Works well in a stressful environment with many personality types
  • Ability to work long hours and to manage an irregular schedule including weekends and holidays
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to work in an active team environment
  • Willingness to learn and grow
  • Ability to lift 50lbs+.
  • Ability to work at heights of 75ft+.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
  • TAIT Navigator Automation Software operating and/or programming experience
  • Experience operating and/or programming performer flying systems
  • Basic knowledge of Siemens or Beckhoff PLC, IO, & control systems pertaining to automated stage machinery

Hourly compensation commensurate with experience. Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, experience, and qualifications
