Job summary

SMS group is seeking a Level 1 Engineer to deliver automation solutions for rolling mill installations globally. You will design, test, and commission Level 1 control systems for hot strip mills and related applications, collaborating with engineering teams across locations.

The role requires travel for integration tests in Germany and long-term commissioning in Louisiana, with a strong emphasis on problem solving and on-site startup success. SMS group offers a dynamic, inclusive environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in an engineering role in metals or similar industry.
• Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers.
• Experience with Logicad and/or Siemens TIA Portal preferred.
• Pickle Line and/or Rolling Mill process knowledge preferred.
• Willing to travel; integration test in Germany, commissioning in USA.
• Strong problem solving under time pressure during commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement Level 1 control systems based on project requirements and SMS standards.
• Perform Level 1 control system programming per equipment function descriptions.
• Collaborate with project management, mechanical, and Level 2 teams.
• Participate in integration testing before shipment to site.
• Conduct on-site commissioning and startup of Level 1 systems for new plants.
• Train customer personnel in maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Support existing systems remotely and on-site with other groups.
• Work under broad objectives with limited supervision.

Program, test, and commission Level 1 control systems for new installations of Hot Strip Mills and other applications in the metals industry.

• Willing to travel to support the project work. Integration test will be 6 months in Germany, commissioning will be 3-5 years in Louisiana, USA

What You’ll Do

• Design and implementation of Level 1 control systems based on project requirements, SMS standards and similar reference projects
• Perform Level 1 control system programming based on the function descriptions for the equipment related to the project
• Collaborate with project management, mechanical, and Level 2 engineering teams
• Participate in integration testing of the control system before shipment to the job site
• Conduct on site commissioning and startup of Level 1 control systems for new plant installations
• Train customer personnel in maintenance and troubleshooting
• Service existing systems remotely and on-site interfacing with internal engineers and resources from other groups and locations
• Supervision received is mostly administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits

What You’ll Need

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar degree
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an engineering role in metals or a similar industry
• Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers
• Experience with Logicad and/or Siemens TIA Portal preferred
• Pickle Line and/or Rolling Mill process knowledge preferred
• Willing to travel to support the project work. Integration test will be 6 months in Germany, commissioning will be 3-5 years in Louisiana, USA
• Problem solving skills especially while under time pressure during commissioning
