Job summary

SMS group Inc. is seeking an Automation Engineer Level 1 for Hot Strip Mills to design and implement Level 1 control systems and to program, test, and commission installations worldwide. You will collaborate with project teams across functions and locations.

The role requires travel, including six months in Germany for integration testing and 3–5 years in Louisiana for commissioning, with opportunities to grow in metals automation technology.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in an engineering role in metals or a similar industry
• Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers
• Experience with Logicad and/or Siemens TIA Portal preferred
• Pickle Line and/or Rolling Mill process knowledge preferred
• Willing to travel to support the project work (Germany 6 months; Louisiana 3–5 years)
• Problem solving skills under time pressure during commissioning

Responsibilities

• Design and implementation of Level 1 control systems based on project requirements
• Perform Level 1 control system programming based on function descriptions for equipment
• Collaborate with project management, mechanical, and Level 2 engineering teams
• Participate in integration testing of the control system before shipment to site
• Conduct on-site commissioning and startup of Level 1 control systems for new plants
• Train customer personnel in maintenance and troubleshooting
• Service existing systems remotely and on-site
• Supervise with broad objectives and limits

About this position

As a Level 1 Engineer, you will play a critical role in delivering world‑class automation solutions for rolling mill installations across global markets, working within a collaborative engineering team at the forefront of metals industry technology. Program, test, and commission Level 1 control systems for new installations of Hot Strip Mills and other applications in the metals industry.

What you’ll do

• Design and implementation of Level 1 control systems based on project requirements, SMS standards and similar reference projects
• Perform Level 1 control system programming based on the function descriptions for the equipment related to the project
• Collaborate with project management, mechanical, and Level 2 engineering teams
• Participate in integration testing of the control system before shipment to the job site
• Conduct on site commissioning and startup of Level 1 control systems for new plant installations
• Train customer personnel in maintenance and troubleshooting
• Service existing systems remotely and on-site interfacing with internal engineers and resources from other groups and locations
• Supervision received is mostly administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits

What you’ll need

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar degree
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an engineering role in metals or a similar industry
• Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers
• Experience with Logicad and/or Siemens TIA Portal preferred
• Pickle Line and/or Rolling Mill process knowledge preferred
