Responsibilities

• Design and implement complex industrial control systems, including programming and configuration of PLCs, DCS platforms, HMIs, VFDs, and related automation equipment
• Develop control system drawings, specifications, P&IDs, hardware/software requirements, and supporting project documentation
• Participate in client and contractor meetings and assist with engineering proposals, project scopes, estimates, and overall project coordination
• Coordinate automation requirements with electrical, instrumentation, piping, civil/structural, and other engineering disciplines
• Lead on-site commissioning and startup activities, system checkout, set-point development, and process control loop tuning
• Provide technical support and training to clients during project implementation and turnover
• Provide technical leadership on larger projects and mentor less experienced automation engineers and specialists
• Troubleshoot control system and equipment issues and develop solutions to improve performance

Technical Solutions Inc. is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer / Specialist III for an opportunity supporting industrial automation and control system projects.

Position Summary

The Automation Engineer / Specialist III will be responsible for the design, programming, testing, commissioning, and startup of complex industrial control systems. This position will work closely with clients, project managers, engineers, and other technical disciplines to successfully execute automation projects from initial design through field startup.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement complex industrial control systems, including programming and configuration of PLCs, DCS platforms, HMIs, VFDs, and related automation equipment
• Develop control system drawings, specifications, P&IDs, hardware/software requirements, and supporting project documentation
• Participate in client and contractor meetings and assist with engineering proposals, project scopes, estimates, and overall project coordination
• Coordinate automation requirements with electrical, instrumentation, piping, civil/structural, and other engineering disciplines
• Lead on-site commissioning and startup activities, including system checkout, set-point development, process control loop tuning, and troubleshooting
• Provide technical support and training to clients during project implementation and turnover
• Provide technical leadership on larger or more complex projects and review, mentor, and support less experienced automation engineers and specialists
• Troubleshoot control system and equipment issues and develop effective solutions to improve system performance

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering with at least 8 years of relevant automation and controls experience; candidates without a bachelor's degree should have 12+ years of directly related industry experience
• Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI configuration, DCS programming, and industrial control systems
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of instrumentation, control system wiring, and grounding practices
• Familiarity with NFPA 70 / National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable electrical codes and standards
• Experience with process control loop tuning, including PID tuning, process identification, Lambda tuning, and loop simulation
• Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a multi-discipline environment
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and applicable engineering/design software; network administration experience is a plus
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required when applicable to the Engineer classification
• Ability to successfully complete required government security/background checks.
