Job summary

Specialist Staffing Group is seeking a Substation Integration & Automation (SIA) Engineer for Birmingham, AL. You will design, configure, install, and support SIA systems, building RTU configurations and providing remote field support.

The role requires a degree in engineering (Electrical/Mechanical preferred) or equivalent experience, with strong knowledge of SCADA, relay logic, and CIP standards. Travel is minimal; EOE.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred) or an Associate degree with applicable experience.
• Experience in SIA, Protection & Controls Design, or Power Delivery tasks is required.
• Experience in substation operations, power delivery, field services, or SCADA support is preferred.
• Experience with relay logic and relay settings for SCADA apps is preferred.
• Familiarity with SCADA protocols and RS232/TCP/IP transport is desirable.
• Knowledge of NERC CIP standards and CIP-compliant system design is appreciated.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

• Support design, configuration, installation, and maintenance of SIA systems.
• Build substation RTU configurations and provide remote field support.
• Use SIA tools to design and configure substation equipment.
• Coordinate with Protection & Controls Field Services to meet deliverables.
• Support automation, cybersecurity, and CIP-compliant solutions.
• Assist with scoping SIA projects with CIP compliance and engineering principles.
• Perform QA reviews of P&C designs and SIA configurations.
• Support standardization, testing of new tech, and SIA infra improvements.
• Ensure work is completed on schedule per company standards.
• Provide technical support to design, construction, planning, marketing, operations, and customers.
• Participate in project meetings and provide status updates.
• Promote a Safety First culture and lead by example.

We have an opportunity for a Substation Integration & Automation (SIA) Engineer in Birmingham, AL.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred) or Associate degree with applicable experience
• Relevant experience in SIA, Protection & Controls Design, Protection & Controls Applications, Protection & Controls Field Services, or Power Delivery SCADA Support
• Experience with transmission and/or distribution substation operations, power delivery, field services engineering, or substation control design engineering
• Experience with transmission and/or distribution substation operations, power delivery, field services engineering, or substation control design engineering
• Experience designing or commissioning SIA systems preferred
• Experience interpreting relay logic and relay settings for SCADA applications preferred
• Knowledge of applicable NERC CIP standards and their impact on SIA designs preferred
• Familiarity with SCADA protocols and transport types (RS232 and TCP/IP based)
• Knowledge of SIA support tools such as Config Studio, MyIED, SEL TEAM, and PI preferred
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products required (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, organizational, and time management skills
• Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications:

• Professional Engineer (PE) license
• Experience with Southern Company Protection & Controls Standards
• Working knowledge of programming languages and frameworks such as C#, Visual Basic, PRISM, and .NET
• Experience with database applications such as SQL Server and Oracle
• Experience with automation, cybersecurity, and CIP-compliant system design

Responsibilities:

• Support the design, configuration, installation, and maintenance of Substation Integration & Automation (SIA) systems
• Build substation RTU configurations and provide remote support for field installations
• Utilize SIA software tools to support the design and configuration of substation equipment
• Coordinate with Protection & Controls Field Services and control centers to ensure project deliverables and customer expectations are achieved
• Support innovative solutions related to automation and cybersecurity challenges
• Assist with project scoping activities for SIA systems while considering NERC CIP compliance and Cyber Informed Engineering principles
• Perform QA reviews of Protection & Controls design packages and SIA configurations
• Support standardization initiatives, testing of new technologies, and SIA infrastructure improvements
• Ensure assigned work is completed on schedule and in accordance with company standards
• Provide technical support to design, construction, planning, marketing, operations, and customers
• Participate in project meetings and provide project status updates
• Promote a Safety First culture and lead by example in all activities

Travel Requirements:

• Minimal field travel may be required
