Job summary

The Planet Group is seeking an Automated Systems Technician to support highly automated manufacturing lines producing medical drug-delivery devices. You will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair equipment, ensuring compliance with quality and FDA requirements while minimizing downtime on a 2nd or 3rd shift on-site in Indianapolis.

Qualified candidates will have 2+ years in automated environments, strong PLC and robotics experience, and familiarity with Cognex vision systems.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in an automated manufacturing environment.
  • Strong PLC experience, preferably Allen Bradley ControlLogix.
  • Experience with robotics, preferably Fanuc.
  • Experience with vision systems, preferably Cognex.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documentation, schematics, and equipment information.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair highly automated manufacturing equipment to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions and independently determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Work with PLCs, robotics, vision systems, and other programmable automation technologies.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLCs, Cognex Vision Systems, Fanuc robots, or comparable systems.
  • Execute preventative maintenance work orders, maintenance protocols, and equipment repairs.
  • Document all maintenance activities and work performed accurately.
  • Train on and master automated equipment maintenance procedures and protocols.
  • Support automated production lines and maintain equipment in a validated state.
  • Assist Engineering with equipment improvements, testing, process improvements, and cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Support testing of procedures and documentation required for regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain customer-specific system documentation in support of FDA requirements.
  • Write and maintain professional documentation, including protocols, work instructions, and engineering studies.
  • Manage assigned projects and maintenance activities while meeting aggressive schedules.
  • Develop the ability to independently support the assigned shift with minimal supervision.
  • Follow company quality systems, safety procedures, and manufacturing protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering, Automation, Maintenance, Quality, and Production teams.

Automated Systems Technician - 651194

Location: Indianapolis, IN – East Side

Pay Range: $27–$35/hour DOE + $1.75/hour shift differential for 2nd & 3rd shift

Work Hours:

  • 2nd Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • 3rd Shift: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM

Type of Employment: Permanent Hire

The Planet Group is currently seeking an Automated Systems Technician for a growing company in the medical device manufacturing industry.

Qualified candidates must have 2+ years of experience maintaining highly automated manufacturing equipment with strong PLC, robotics, and troubleshooting experience. Experience with Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLCs, Cognex Vision Systems, and Fanuc robots is highly preferred, although comparable automation technologies will be considered. Medical manufacturing experience is preferred but not required; candidates from automotive and other highly automated manufacturing environments are encouraged to apply.

Job Description

The Automated Systems Technician will work directly on highly automated manufacturing lines supporting the production of medical drug-delivery devices. Approximately 70% of the role will involve troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing automated equipment to keep production running safely and efficiently.

This position will be responsible for maintaining automated manufacturing lines and supporting equipment while meeting quality, cost, and delivery objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot and repair highly automated manufacturing equipment to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions and independently determine appropriate corrective actions.

  • Understand requirements for maintaining equipment in a validated state.
  • Execute maintenance work orders and protocols independently.
6–12+ Months
  • Independently support the assigned shift with minimal assistance.
  • Create, modify, and troubleshoot programmable technologies on automated equipment.
  • Assist Engineering with equipment improvements and cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Demonstrate understanding of FDA 21 CFR 820/GMP medical device requirements.
  • Maintain automated equipment in a validated state.
Requirements
  • 2+ years of experience in an automated manufacturing environment.
  • Strong technical aptitude with automated manufacturing systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing highly automated production equipment.
  • Strong PLC experience, preferably Allen Bradley ControlLogix.
  • Experience with robotics, preferably Fanuc.
  • Experience with vision systems, preferably Cognex.
  • Comparable automation technologies will be considered.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documentation, schematics, and equipment information.
  • Ability to compose professional technical documentation, including work instructions and protocols.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize work, and meet production deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and support an assigned shift.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Medical device manufacturing experience is a plus but not required.
  • Automotive, electronics, or other highly automated manufacturing experience will be considered.
  • Degree is not required if the candidate has sufficient hands‑on automation experience.
  • Must be willing to work either 2nd or 3rd shift.
Additional Information

This is an on‑site position with no remote or hybrid option and no travel required. Overtime may be available. Candidates will be required to complete a background check and drug screen. Sponsorship and relocation assistance are not available.
