PowerSecure, a Southern Company subsidiary, is seeking an Autocad Drafter (Part Time) to learn and contribute to generation and electrical switchgear manufacturing. You will work with engineers and project teams on drawings, documentation, and project support while developing practical industry skills.

The role emphasizes collaboration, adherence to safety, and hands-on drafting tasks across multiple operations.

Qualifications

• Engineering or CAD drafting majors, or currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
• Available to work 20 hours per week for the duration of the opportunity.
• Must be in good standing with school and have at least sophomore status.
• GPA 3.0 or higher; proficient in MS Office, AutoCAD, and planning tools.
• Ability to apply engineering principles and read/write specifications.

Description

Job Summary:

A student hired for this position should expect to learn all facets of our generation and electrical switchgear manufacturing as well as the design, implementation, and service of those projects, and will leave this position with invaluable skills and industry knowledge. Student drafters will work alongside engineers, project managers and technical professionals while undertaking short-term responsibilities which may involve any or all of the following: research, analysis, project management, process development, project responsibilities, and project documentation. A student drafter will be assigned to specific operations-related work needs once they are on board.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills):

• Applicants should be engineering or CAD drafting majors; specifically, Industrial, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering majors OR currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in , Industrial, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
• Must be available to work 20 hours per week for the duration of the opportunity.
• Students must be in good standing with their school.
• Must have achieved at least sophomore status.
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and other analytical and planning tools.
• Knowledge of basic engineering principles and techniques; of engineering planning; of equipment and materials used in engineering operations; of specialized subjects used in the fields of engineering, such as mathematics, statistics, mechanics, power, physics, and chemistry; and of strength of materials.
• Ability is required to apply engineering principles to practical engineering problems; to use engineering equipment and tools, including computer applications; to make, read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications; to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to relate abstract ideas to actual needs and adopt an effective course of action; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to work with multiple functions to coordinate the flow of information.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, co-workers, and management.
• Continue to grow lean knowledge and use the tools to identify and assist with continuous improvement.
• Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
• Provide support to the lead Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineers in tasks such as part and assembly drawing/design or classification, engineering analysis and test, PLC/HMI programming, and support of proof-of-concept or final system testing.
• Work issues across multiple functions including mechanical, electrical, fabrication, assembly, and sales. Perform routine tasks under close supervision using well-defined standards and procedures.
• Support the development and documentation of standard procedures, design standardization, and engineering change notices.
• Use predetermined methods, sequences, and setups to perform job duties.
• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Extended periods of sitting and working in front of a computer. If assigned to a manufacturing project, extended periods of standing, loud noises, and walking will be encountered. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Typically, office environment can be expected. Occasional site visits may requires adapting to changing weather conditions.
