Job summary

ABB in St. Louis, MO seeks an Auto Punch Press Operator for 1st shift to support high‑volume metal stamping. You will be trained across the full press line, monitor safety and process controls, and maintain quality during every cycle.

The role requires lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for long periods, and overtime as needed. Strong attention to detail and adherence to ABB safety policies are essential for success.

Responsibilities

  • Operate auto punch press and related equipment per SOPs.
  • Inspect parts for burrs, defects, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Maintain clean and organized work area throughout shifts.
  • Monitor lubrication, loop integrity, and safety devices during production.
  • Report injuries or near misses to supervision promptly.
  • Assist in setup and changeovers and support die jams clearance as needed.

Job description

Auto Punch Press Operator - 1st Shift

Reports to: Manufacturing Manager - NEMA

Essential Functions

Auto Press Operators must be able to perform these functions in a manner that does not compromise their safety or the safety of coworkers. The operator must be able to perform tasks for a minimum of 8 hours per day, 5 days a week.

Operators will be trained in all steps of the job. Stretching exercises will be performed at the beginning of every shift. Supervisor will review Job Safety Analysis sheets, safety checklist, personal protective equipment (PPE) and instructions for daily clean‑up.

Requirements

Always follow the Work Instructions.

  • Manual lifting requirements up to 50 pounds.
  • Operator will be trained on all steps of the job.
  • Operator will be trained on operating an electric pallet truck.
  • Must know where Emergency Stops are located for the press you are running.
  • Must check Emergency Stops and light curtains to be working properly.
  • Verify the Press Release Form (QFSL-A001) is located at the press and is signed by a supervisor before running the press. Note: This must be done with each order.
  • Visually inspect parts for burrs, chips, slug marks, bent teeth and missing features.
  • Always inspect a part before running on continuous.
  • Flatness must be checked 3 times per coil (back‑to‑back flatness check).
  • Must verify inventory tags, coil numbers and blueprints match the work order.
  • Match the part to the blueprint.
  • Next you will be trained on how to feed the material through the straightener, feeder and up to the starting point in the die and slowly inch the material through the die.
  • Always ensure the strip is receiving plenty of lubrication.
  • Must keep an eye on the loop between the presses and scrap conveyor to be running.
  • The operator will use an air wire twister to wire the stacks of lamination.
  • At the end of the die run the operator will turn off the press, dereeler, straightener and the feeder.
  • Must fill out a Red Tag for all Non‑Con material and move it to the Non‑Con area.
  • Once the flywheel has stopped the operator will remove the end coil strip out of the die and send it to the Tool Room with the die. Then wipe all oil off the die and clean the area thoroughly.
  • Must work safely and pay attention to surroundings and immediately report injuries, accidents and near misses to Supervisor.
  • Ability to understand and follow all ABB safety policies, safety training and hazard communication information. This includes wearing proper PPE such as safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes, cut‑resistant gloves and safety sleeves when required.
  • Lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently grip with hands, turn, push, and bend, along with occasional reaching above shoulder level, and pulling.
  • Ability to walk and/or stand for long periods of time and keep up with the demanding pace of production.
  • Possess dexterity and hand‑eye coordination to utilize various hand tools, power tools, and other equipment to complete a variety of complex tasks. Equipment includes electric chain hoists, pneumatic shears, pneumatic wire twisters, electric pallet jacks, manual pallet jacks, and controls with knobs and buttons. Must also assist in performing press‑line equipment set‑up and clearing of die jams.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions. Ability to read, write, use a calculator. Must also read and comprehend work orders, blueprints, inventory tags, and shipping labels.
  • Ability to maintain regular work attendance, including arriving on time and remaining until the end of the scheduled workday.
  • Ability to work daily and weekend overtime, including overtime on short notice.

$22.70 - $28.59 (Shift premium for 2nd & 3rd shift)
