Job summary

City of Alcoa (INC) seeks a skilled Automotive Equipment Mechanic to maintain city vehicles and heavy equipment across departments. The role covers on-road and off-road machinery, performs tune-ups, repairs, and minor fabrication, and may weld or do body work.

Safety-sensitive position with standby and overtime as needed. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or vocational training, 2 years of automotive experience or 5 years of equivalent repair work, plus ASE/ EVT or ability to obtain

Qualifications

• High school diploma or vocational training with automotive repair coursework.
• 2 years of automotive mechanic experience in maintenance/repair of small engines, autos, trucks, and construction equipment.
• Five years of automotive repair experience also acceptable; ASE/EVT certifications or ability to obtain within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Repairs automotive systems (brakes, ignition, electrical, hydraulic, transmissions, fuel).

Job description

Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of all city departments. Work involves scheduled and unscheduled repair jobs for both on-road and off-road equipment. Equipment also ranges from 2-cycle engines to both gasoline and diesel automotive equipment as well as trucks, construction & maintenance equipment. Work is performed under the general direction of the department / division leadworker/supervisor. Work also extends to doing minor paint & body work, welding and other minor fabrication jobs when necessary. This is a safety-sensitive position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES PERFORMED

• Repairs and maintains small-engine equipment such as grass trimmers, lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc.;
• Makes repairs and adjustments to automotive, truck and equipment systems such as brakes, ignition, electrical, hydraulic, compressed air, transmissions, drive-train, fuel (gasoline and diesel), exhaust and other similar and/or related systems;
• Performs tune-ups;
• Performs field repair work on construction equipment;
• Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment;
• Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work;
• Repairs and maintains both gasoline fueled (two-stroke and four-stroke) and diesel fueled engines;
• Cuts , welds, and fabricates metal;
• Performs minor auto body repair, touch up and related work;
• Evaluates parts requirements and has the ability to order or direct the ordering of needed parts and related accessories;
• Evaluates and diagnoses mechanical equipment problems quickly and accurately, and performs or schedules repairs as needed;
• Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate;
• Maintains complete and accurate electronic records on labor and parts used on equipment repairs;
• Assists in the administration of the City fleet maintenance program;
• Works with, provides knowledge and assists when appropriate subordinate Fleet Services personnel;
• Works overtime as required;
• May be required to work standby on a rotating basis;
• Subject to call-in for specified emergencies;
• Reports to work as scheduled and on time, even under inclement weather conditions.

OTHER DUTIES PERFORMED

• Performs related work as required;
• Completes training and coursework necessary to obtain and maintain specified ASE certifications in the craft;
• Serves as a member of various employee teams.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Graduation from a standard or vocational high school and successful completion of a course in automotive equipment repair of at least six (6) months duration and two (2) years experience as an automotive mechanic in the maintenance and repair of small engines, automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment and proven ability to perform the task described herein; or
• Graduation from a standard or vocational high school and five (5) years experience as an automotive mechanic in the maintenance and repair of small engines, automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment and proven ability to perform the tasks described herein.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Working knowledge of and skills & abilities in the principles and practices of the maintenance and repair of all classes of small engine equipment, automotive equipment, trucks, and construction equipment;
• Working knowledge of and skills & abilities in the use of the tools and equipment used in the automotive and equipment repair trade;
• Knowledge of and skills & abilities in various welding, cutting and metal fabrication techniques;
• Ability to repair and maintain most classes of small-engine, automotive and construction equipment;
• Ability to work with Support Services warehouse personnel in the planning, ordering, and stocking of preventive maintenance parts and equipment;
• Ability to schedule work so as to keep equipment down time to a minimum;
• Ability to keep records and maintain parts inventory as necessary to meet routine operational and emergency conditions;
• Working knowledge of and skill & ability in the use of automotive repair tools and diagnostic equipment and practices.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Tennessee and as determined by the Department Director or the ability to obtain the same upon employment;
• ASE, EVT, and/or other certifications identified by the Department Director or ability to obtain the same within twelve (12) months of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee is required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lifts weights up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
