Job summary

The City of Decatur, AL is seeking a maintenance mechanic to participate in the mechanical repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment. You will perform engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, hydraulic, and transmission repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment, and conduct preventative maintenance and diagnostics.

You will handle emergency roadside repairs, complete work orders, manage parts and inventory, and weld/fabricate components as needed while adhering to safety guidelines

Qualifications

• Completion of specialized training in the field in addition to basic high school skills.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles of the major duties.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Alabama driver’s license for the vehicle type operated.
• Knowledge of repair methods, tools and equipment for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of department and city policies, safety, and preventative maintenance schedules.

Responsibilities

• Perform engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, hydraulic, and transmission repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Execute scheduled preventative maintenance checks on batteries, tires, lights, transmissions and brakes.
• Conduct engine diagnostic procedures and troubleshoot failures on job sites.
• Perform emergency roadside repairs and transport vehicles as needed.
• Complete work orders and purchase requests; maintain shop tools and inventory.
• Research, order, and pickup parts; weld and fabricate parts as required.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety in the shop and assist with related duties.

Job description

This position is responsible for participating in the mechanical repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.

• Performs engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, hydraulic, and transmission repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.

• Performs scheduled preventative maintenance functions, including checking the condition of and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, brakes, etc.
• Performs a variety of engine diagnostic procedures.
• Performs emergency roadside repairs on vehicles as required; troubleshoots vehicle/equipment failures at job sites.
• Completes required paperwork related to work orders and purchases requests.
• Maintains shop equipment and assigned tools.
• Maintains parts and supply inventory.
• Researches, orders, and picks up parts as needed.
• Delivers vehicles and equipment to the dealer for repairs.
• Performs small engine repairs.
• Maintains the shop and performs housekeeping duties.
• Welds and fabricates parts.
• Performs related duties.

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

• The work consists of related vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair duties. The variety of equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the work.
• The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and well-maintained vehicles for a variety of city operations.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

• The work is typically performed in a garage, stockroom, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
