Job summary

Atlanta Public Schools in Georgia seeks a highly qualified Special Education AUTISM Teacher to support students with moderate to profound needs. The educator will deliver differentiated instruction, track progress, and maintain a positive classroom climate.

Candidates must be professionally certified or have passed the GACE tests and hold Adapted Curriculum Special Education certification along with the five academic content areas. In-person, on-site duties at the assigned school.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• SRT4-Certification in Adapted Curriculum Special Education and all five Academic Content Areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, English) OR GACE Basic Skills with eligibility and certified in Adapted Curriculum SPED.
• Georgia PSC Certificate of Eligibility if not issued in Georgia.

Job description

Atlanta Public Schools is looking for a highly qualified Special Education AUTISM Teacher. The candidate must be a motivated individual who has the ability to ensure student success through differentiated instruction. They must be able to create and maintain a climate that promotes respect, tolerance and peaceful problem solving for all students. Highly qualified candidates are individuals who are professionally certified or have passed the appropriate GACE tests for certification in the subject areas l62isted below. The district is seeking to hire teachers who are innovative, enthusiastic, and looking for the opportunity to prepare students for a successful future. This position reports to the School Principal and will be assigned to be physically present in the school building location.

A knowledge of general characteristics of children that are moderate, severe or profound intellectually disabled and other related services that may include special transportation, occupational, physical therapies speech, adapted physical education, and technology are required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

CERTIFICATION:

• Minimum of SRT4-Certification in Adapted Curriculum Special Education AND ALL 5 of the Special Education Academic Content Areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and English); OR
• Passed the GACE Basic Skills Assessment or have exemption eligibility (ACT/SAT/GRE scores) AND passed the Adapted Curriculum Special Education AND the Special Education Academic Content Areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and English).
• Must hold the Georgia PSC issued Certificate of Eligibility if educator certification not issued in the state of Georgia.

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor's Degree required
• WORK EXPERIENCE:
• Work experience gained through education and certification/license requirements.
• Available for face-to-face instruction within the school building with students present

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Instructs students with a moderate, severe, or profound intellectual disabled through lectures, discussions, visual aids, and other effective teaching methods for student comprehension
• Prepares lessons and outlines to use in class that effectively cover the material
• Administers various types of assessments i.e. performance assessments, formal and informal assessments, etc. to monitor student progress and develop an Individualized Educational Plan
• Monitors students in the classroom and throughout the school to maintain order and discipline
• Performs various administrative duties such as taking attendance, organizing the classroom, and recording grades
• Coordinates parent/teacher conferences as needed to review student's performance, behavior and other issues
• Attends faculty meetings and training sessions
• Adheres to local, state and national testing procedures
• Instruct students in an in-person classroom environment through lectures, discussions, visual aids, instructional strategies and other effective teaching methods for student comprehension.
• Prepares lessons and outlines to use in class that effectively cover the material.
• Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
• Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.
• Administers various types of assessments to monitor student's comprehension of the material.
• Administer and/or supports state and local testing processes and policies.
• Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
• Assist students who need extra help with tutoring. Guides and counsels students with adjustment or academic problems or special academic interests.
• When in an in-person classroom environment, responsible for daily classroom clean up and wiping down surfaces to uphold sanitation standards as required for safe school environment.
• Monitors students in the classroom, at lunch or throughout the school by maintaining order and discipline.
• Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
• Performs various administrative duties such as taking attendance, organizing the classroom, and responding to emails and phone calls from parents, school administrators, and staff in a timely manner.
• Collaborates with other teachers and administrators to develop, evaluate, and revise academic programs following approved curricula.
• Coordinates in-person conferences with parents and guardians to review student's performance, behavior and other issues.
• Attends in-person faculty meetings, teacher training workshops and educational conferences to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and correct student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
• Assists administrators and other staff members in the orderly, expedient and safe transition of students from one location to another.
• Assists with training volunteers in-person.
• Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours and as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.
