Job summary

Lewis County Schools seeks an Itinerant Surge Classroom Special Education Instructional Aide/Autism Mentor for Robert Bland Middle School SPED, currently located at Lewis County High School. The role supports students under a surge assignment at RBMS.

The ideal candidate will have Autism Mentor certification (or willingness to obtain), First Aid and CPR, and pass the State Aide Competency Test. This position requires assisting with classroom activities, schedules, and transportation when needed.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High School diploma or equivalent per WV Code §18A-2-5.
• Criminal Background check per WV Code § 18-5-15c.
• Must possess a valid First Aid card and CPR certified.
• Must pass State Aide's Competency Test if not already employed.
• Autism Mentor certification or willingness to obtain certification.

Responsibilities

• Undersupervision of licensed teacher, prepare for classroom activities.
• Help students learn to care for personal belongings.
• Assist with non-instructional duties, on playground, cafeteria, and bus loading/unloading.
• Assist with recess and occasional trips.
• Handle routine interruptions and support the teacher when needed.
• Support development of student self-discipline through positive reinforcement.
• Assist during instructional times with drills, reading, story telling and small group activities.
• Work with small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
• Evaluate the day’s work with the teacher and plan for the next day.
• Maintain high ethical standards and confidentiality of student information.
• Uphold school rules and assist the teacher with computer hardware/software usage.
