Job summary

Argonne National Laboratory seeks an ATLAS Operator to support the ATLAS accelerator operations at the U.S. Department of Energy flagship facility near Chicago.

You will operate, tune, troubleshoot, and maintain accelerator systems while collaborating with scientific users to ensure successful experiments. You will alternate as Chief Shift Operator, upholding radiation safety and operational protocol; contribute to upgrades in beam optics, controls, detector systems, and vacuum technology.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline is preferred but not required.
• Knowledge of accelerator operations areas such as electronics, cryogenics, control systems, vacuum systems and magnets.
• Familiarity with concepts relevant to particle accelerator facilities.
• Willingness to learn a broad range of technologies used at ATLAS including RF systems, electronics, beam optics, vacuum, sources, magnetics and control systems.
• Strong communication and organizational skills, with safety and teamwork values.

Responsibilities

• Operate the ATLAS particle accelerator independently and with the team.
• Tune accelerator systems to support experiments.
• Diagnose equipment issues and perform maintenance and repairs.
• Assist with upgrades and improvements to accelerator systems.
• Collaborate with users to support experiment execution.
• Serve as Chief Shift Operator as assigned, ensuring safe operation and radiation safety compliance.
• Work with experts to improve beam optics, controls, detectors, and vacuum technology.
