Job summary

UW Health in Madison, WI is seeking an Athletic Trainer – Physician Extender for a part-time 0.8 FTE, day shift. Responsibilities include patient history and exams, care coordination, rehabilitation instruction, and use of orthopedic devices to improve patient comfort.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate Degree in Athletic Training – Required.
  • Master's Degree in healthcare, athletic training, education or business – Preferred.
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification – Required
  • Licensed Athletic Trainer in the State of WI – Required
  • Valid driver's license for use in Wisconsin and current auto insurance – Required
  • Certification in specialty area of practice – Required
  • 3 years of experience as an Athletic Trainer in the applicable setting – Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform appropriate medical history and physical examination on patients.
  • Assist in care coordination by placing orders for surgical case requests, diagnostic imaging, interventional radiology procedures, and other referrals under the direction of the attending provider.
  • Provide initial rehabilitation exercises and the instruction, demonstration, and feedback on patient performance of the exercises as directed by the attending physician.
  • Application, adjustment, and education of appropriate use of orthopedic durable medical equipment such as crutches, braces, and splints to provide optimized comfort for patient.
  • Coordinate and review internal and external patient medical records and imaging prior to appointment to ensure optimal patient care and clinic efficiency.
  • Assist or perform patient care procedures including, but not limited to, wound care, dressing changes, suture and splint removal.
  • Assist with in-clinic joint aspiration and wound culture preparation which includes ordering appropriate labs, labeling specimen, and securing transportation of specimen to laboratory.

Part-time, .80 FTE, day shift. Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:30am - 5:30pm, no weekend rotation required. Hours may vary based on the operational needs of the department.

Educational Background
  • Undergraduate Degree in Athletic Training – Required
  • Master's Degree in healthcare, athletic training, education or business – Preferred
Work Experience
  • 3 years of experience as an Athletic Trainer in the applicable setting – Preferred
Licenses & Certifications
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification – Required
  • Licensed Athletic Trainer in the State of WI – Required (UW Health may allow a one‑month grace period to obtain license in extenuating circumstances. No patient care will be performed within the grace period.)
  • Valid driver's license for use in Wisconsin and current auto insurance – Required
  • Certification in specialty area of practice – Required
