Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Athletic Trainer works collaboratively with various physicians and their support teams within the Orthopedic Service Line to provide direct patient care for pediatric and adolescent populations in clinical, and/or school based and community outreach settings. The Athletic Trainer primarily assists in the evaluation of patients, development and communication of a customized plan of care for the patient and family, and administration of patient educational content under the direction of the attending provider. Practices within the domains established by the Board of Certification which are: prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries and illnesses when caring for patients as well as practicing within experiential knowledge, and evidence-based guidelines.

Essential Functions – Overall Functions
  • Exhibits guiding behaviors that reflect Children\'s values and support our mission and vision.
  • Specializes in needs and care of neonatal, infant, toddler, pre-school, school-age, adolescent and/or adult patient in regards to their growth and development process.
  • Participates in a collaborative fashion to provide care with orthopedic providers, clinic staff and appropriate school / community personnel resulting in optimal patient outcomes.
  • Promotes the Orthopedic Service Line in the community by participating in event coverage, educational presentations, teaching, & research as needed under the direction of the orthopedics service line.
  • Responds to emergency situations as appropriate per level of training.
  • Assures that equipment needed for patient care is available at all times. Addresses any deficiencies or unsafe equipment with the appropriate department. Cleans equipment after use.
  • Communicates with physicians, leaders, and staff to maintain and optimize operations.
  • Within scope of practice, obtains a history of present illness and completes an accurate physical exam.
  • Administers computerized neurocognitive testing and other concussion specific testing as needed by the attending physician.
  • Provides comprehensive information to patient and family based on educational levels and taking a cross-cultural approach to explain all aspects of treatment plan, additional advanced orders and scheduling. In addition, aids in identifying home management and community resources necessary for home care implementation all while demonstrating respect, patience, empathy, and compassion.
  • Fits and adjusts durable medical equipment (DME) or applies select casts as needed by the provider.
  • Prioritizes and organizes time to complete ancillary duties assigned by service line leadership & providers in an effective and timely manner within standard clinical hours of operation.
  • Employee will focus in either a Clinic Setting or School Setting, but may be expected to perform in both settings based on need.
Clinic Setting Specific Responsibilities
  • Rooms patient/family which include: obtaining and documenting patient vital signs. Updates clinical information in the electronic medical health record including allergy and medication reconciliation, progress note entry, patient educational materials, etc. Prepares exam rooms to meet safety and clinical requirements.
  • Orders basic imaging studies on behalf of the attending physician following established protocol.
  • Under direction of attending physician, practices sterile technique relative to pre and post-operative care, removing sutures, dressing changes, preparing injections and assisting with diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Monitors and works to optimize clinic flow, keeping patients informed of wait times, delays, etc.
  • Assists in medication counting of controlled substances in accordance with the Children\'s Hospital of Wisconsin policy.
School Based / Community Setting Specific Responsibilities
  • Develops plan for providing athletic training coverage for athletic training facility hours and at interscholastic athletic events with appropriate personnel as identified in the school – based or community partner contract.
  • Manages inventory of and budget allocation for athletic training supplies and equipment in collaboration with service line leadership.
  • Creates and maintains comprehensive venue and condition specific emergency action plans.
  • Maintains appropriate medical records of athlete injuries in compliance with Children\'s Wisconsin policy.
  • Implements appropriate policies and procedures in the school based or community setting for sports related issues such as concussion, heat illness, CPR/AED, etc.
  • Completes (school systems) policy training as required by the district or school system.
  • Performs skinfold testing per the frequency and standards as outlined in the school-based or community partner contract.
Education
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in athletic training required
  • Master\'s Degree preferred
Experience
  • 1+ years athletic training experience with adolescent or pediatric patients preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work with a diverse patient population to ensure a culturally competent environment.
Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
  • BOC-Certified Athletic Trainer - Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer required
  • License Athletic Trainer (39) - State of Wisconsin within 30 Days required
  • ORTHO-Orthopedic Technician - National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists, Inc. preferred
